Jamie says of the day…
“Over the past few years I’ve had the pleasure of shooting several weddings and recently even got to shoot an elopement…on Valentine’s Day.”
“Then I was contacted by Karen who told me all about her’s and Neil’s Gretna Green Marriage Renewal of Vows.”
“This would be their 13th wedding anniversary and this would also be the second time they’d renewed having previously renewed their vows on their 10th wedding anniversary in Ireland.”
“There would only be a few weeks between Karen first contacting me and actually shooting the day for them.”
“I knocked on the door of the Penthouse at Smiths in Gretna, a little apprehensive as we’d barely had any time to get to know each other.”
“Neil answered the door. Within seconds I felt like I’d known him for years.”
“I just got this instant feeling that here was a man who absolutely loves life. He had loads of energy and just smiled all the time. And laugh? He never stopped!”
“Karen was just finishing off getting her hair done and then came in to chat.”
“They poured a glass of bubbly and sat on the sofa chatting.”
“A little later I was in the bedroom getting shots of perfume bottles when I heard roars of laughter.”
“They were watching Judge Ridder and absolutely killing themselves, laughing at his cutting, quick remarks. I’ve got to admit, I was in stitches too!”
“Back n the bedroom, I was getting shots of the dress. It was a stunning dress made with Hunter tartan with Neil wearing a matching waistcoat.”
“Chatting to the two of them they both admitted they were both really nervous…which in their own words was ridiculous as they had already done this twice before!”
“With dress and suit on, Karen sat on the bed and Neil helped her fasten up her Christian Louboutin shoes.”
“We were now ready for the off. It was now that I was introduced to Neil’s best man…Smithy.”
“Smithy is a small teddy bear and he went everywhere with us for the rest of the day. In fact, he got most of the attention.”
“The four of us headed over to the Old Blacksmith’s Shop. I’d shot there just before Christmas so it was familiar territory.”
“As with my time there at Christmas, the welcome from the staff there was outstanding.”
“They do a lot of weddings at The Blacksmiths but you never get the sense of that. You feel like an individual and not on a conveyor belt.”
“We headed into the museum and looked at the carriages.”
“A family were in there too and Neil headed towards them and asked if they wanted to come in a watch the ceremony and act as witnesses.”
“The little girl’s eyes lit up. The three of them in the family were delighted and of course said yes.”
“When they set off that morning and decided to have a look around the museum they never imagined that they would also be witnessing what makes Gretna Green famous. Now THAT is a museum experience.”
“Of course it did confuse others for a second. “But you don’t need a witness for a renewal” Neil was told. “Yeah but why not. Seemed like a good idea” he replied.
“As we waited to go to the Forge, Smithy seemed to be everywhere. He’s definitely an attention seeker, sitting on a suit of armour, sitting on a carriage (even when everyone else was told not to) and then on the anvil.”
“We were then ushered towards the doors. The piper started playing and led Neil and Karen in.”
“The little girl in the family was beaming! She looked so excited! They were stood on the steps of the Forge, the lovebirds were behind the Anvil….and Smithy took a seat right at the front!”
“So, I’ve done quite a few renewal of vows but somehow this one felt a bit different.”
“It actually felt like they were doing this for the first time. They had the nerves, they had the excitement, they had the nervous giggles.”
“They kept looking at each other and smiling. 13 years on and they both seem as deeply in love with each other as they probably were when they first got married.”
“Neil kept giggling and saying “magic!”. It certainly was!”
“When they were told to face each other and hold hands, Karen handed her bouquet to the little girl. Oh my Goodnss! I think that made her day!”
“She stood there in front of her mum and dad twirling back and forth holding this huge bouquet of orchids. She definitely has something to tell her friends when she gets home.”
“With the vows done, a length of Hunter tartan was tied around their hands. The ceremonial tying of the knot followed by the first kiss…again.”
“The piper then piped us all out of the Blacksmiths.”
“Outside, we said our goodbyes to the family of three and made our way back over to Smiths.”
“All the way, the Renewlyweds laughed and giggled.”
“We stopped in the bar of the hotel for a quick drink and to allow Karen to check out the little alcove where they’d be having their mini-reception.”
“Then we went back up to the Penthouse for some more photos. On the balcony, over looking the stunning countryside, we stood and chatted.”
“I got a few more shots of the Lovebirds finishing off with some shots of Neil which for me are the perfect portraits that reflect him. Larger than life, laughing constantly.”
“I only spent a few hours with them but what a brilliant few hours I had with Karen and Neil.”
“They were so much fun to work with and I felt like I’ve known them all my life! So here’s to another 13 years and more!!”
