Body image is something pretty much all women, if we are honest, struggle with.
Personally I have struggled with my weight my entire life with dieting down to basically unhealthy proportions, to a semblance of normal (whats that anyway) and my now more curvaceous form.
The media thrusts such crazy expectations on what is beautiful and what is not, and can send even the most self assured person into a spin.
Bridal boudoir or wedding boudoir photography is the hottest new trend that’s especially popular as a wedding day gift from a bride-to be to her partner.
Images of yourself wearing sexy underwear , or possibly nothing at all, are usually given as a gift to your other half the day before or on the wedding night!
It is a great way of not only feeling empowered and amazing about your femininity, and body image but also a lovely surprise to your partner!
Boudoir photography isn’t about being a certain size, it’s about celebrating your femininity and being a woman.
Whilst is not something I have ever done, I wish I had the courage to.
Back in the days when I got married (10 years ago) Bridal boudoir wasn’t even a thing so didn’t cross my mind, and I celebrated my form following my Big Day in a different way with maternity photography
Tatum Reid is a Norfolk based wedding photographer based in Norwich.
She says, “I count myself lucky…I get to do what I love everyday.”
“I love natural light and try to capture real and emotive images that tell a story.”
“I mainly focus on wedding photography in Norfolk, East Anglia and Suffolk, but also cover surrounding areas such as Cambridge and London (or further afield!)
“However, I also specialise in lifestyle, and boudoir photography.”
Below, Tatum has captured some incredible boudoir photography, and some lovely ladies tell their stories of maintaining a positive body image, and the boudoir experience.
Who are you
“Hello, I’m Kelly and my husband Simon and I have been together now for almost 7 years, married for 1.”
“We have 2 amazing boys, aged 3 & 8 so we were lucky enough to have them as pageboys at our wedding.”
“Our wedding day was THE most amazing day of my whole life!”
Why you did the boudoir shoot
“I chose to do a boudoir photo book for my husband (to be) to give to him as a gift, the evening before we got married.”
“I gave it to him wrapped and told him to open it that evening (alone!).”
“The next day, we got married and after the ceremony I asked him ‘Did you like your gift?’
“To which he responded. ..’Amazing!’
“Don’t get me wrong I was nervous on the morning of the photo shoot but I was feeling more relaxed once I had had makeup done and we had had a cup of tea!”
“I’d met with Tatum a couple of times before this day to discuss the type of thing to expect and we’d looked through and discussed posses etc that I was comfortable doing.”
“Once you remove your gown that first time and get comfy on the bed, the nerves dissappear and we had a real good laugh!”
“When we’d finished I felt liberated and so glad I had done it. Highly recommend it to any woman!”
Who are you
“Hello, I’m Helen and I’m a 29 year old married girly woman, but the last two years my weekends have been consumed by us building our house.”
“I’m more likely to be knee-deep in dust and wearing old clothes than wearing pretty dresses at the moment!”
Why you did the boudoir shoot
“I did the shoot to express my femininity and get my sexy back really!”
“Sexy does not come easy to me so when I found out I won the boudoir competition (I never usually win anything) I completely freaked out think “why on earth did I enter that competition??”
“In my total panic I had to go by all new underwear, courtesy of the M&S sale as with builder’s bills, underwear hasn’t been at the top of my priority list!!”
“On the day I was so nervous I could have been sick, I have a few scars on my body (from having a kidney transplant 5 years ago) and it dawned on me not only do I have to be pictured in my underwear I also won’t be able to hide my scars!”
“Anyway as soon as I arrived Tatum and Georgie the make up artist made me feel comfortable almost instantly.”
“They made me giggle and just chatted away I soon forgot I was being photographed in my underwear.”
“Most of us girls have body image hang ups either big or small so if you ever get the chance to do a Boudoir shoot I would throughly recommend it as it really boosted my confidence and made me realise that I can scrub up ok!”
Who are you
“Hi, I’m *Elizabeth* and in order to tell you a bit about myself, I suppose I first have to reveal the main reasons behind me taking part in a Boudoir shoot.”
“Firstly I wanted to do it as a gift, to give my (then to be) husband the night before our wedding. (We have now been married 9 weeks!)”
“And secondly I turned 30 in the same week as I had my Boudoir session.”
“Myself and my partner have been together for 12 years.”
“As we met a few weeks before my eighteenth birthday, I have done a lot of growing and changing in the time we have been together.”
“And I know that as we look towards married life and all that it will hopefully gift us with, inevitably my body will again change.”
“I wanted this moment in time to be my gift to him.”
“When we are of the age where our children have had children of there own and we find ourselves wondering if we were ever as beautiful, young, firm fleshed and slender as they are, there will be some proof that this grandma once was!”
Why you did the boudoir shoot
“My shoot wasn’t just a gift to my husband, it was also a gift to myself.”
“I wanted to mark turning 30 and all the confidence that comes with age.”
“If someone had suggested that I modeled for a shoot when I was in my early twenties, I would have said ‘No Way’.”
“I just didn’t have that amount of body confidence.”
“My shoot marks a time at which I am truly comfortable and happy with my own body.”
“And no, it wasn’t because I had dieted myself silly on the lead up to the big day, because I hadn’t!”
“In actual fact (although not big) I am the heaviest and curviest I have ever been.”
“After suffering a long term illness for 13 years, which although wasn’t an eating disorder did bring many difficulties to do with food and eating, I now find myself at a place where I am as well as I have been for a long time.”
And to me and my partner this really shows in my body.
“I’m sure that there are many that think boudoir photography isn’t for them, and for quite a long time I would probably have been counted in that number.”
“I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t at all nervous or apprehensive the morning of the shoot.”
“I felt so sick I wanted to cancel but I did it and I can honestly say it is one of the most empowering and sexy things I have ever done!”
“Although there are many different reasons why people have boudoir images taken; maybe like me its to mark a landmark life event or birthday, or its as a gift for a loved one on a special anniversary.”
“In actual fact, I don’t think there is any better reason than to just do it for yourself!”
“When you feel your confidence slipping or you have to summons up courage to handle a difficult situation there is nothing better than to take out your book of boudoir images, look at all those pictures of yourself when you stepped out of your comfort zone and you immediately feel empowered with the knowledge that you can face whatever is thrown at you next!”
Thank you so much to Tatum for sharing her wonderful photography, and to these amazing ladies for being secure and empowered in their own body image to share their stories today.
Boudoir Photography is about being comfortable in your own skin.
Its about blasting those perceptions that we have about our own body image and the expectations that are lambasted upon us every day by the outside world and saying hey, I am beautiful.
The human body does amazing things, and whether we are curvy or slender its about taking hold of all our insecurities and saying hey, I am bigger than you and embracing that fear.
