The couple tell us about themselves and their Kent wedding day…
How did you meet?
We met through mutual friends over 24 years ago – it just took us a long time to get married!
Tell us about the Proposal…
There have been many over the years but it took us to have our 60th birthdays to say let’s just do it .
We visit Hever Castle a lot and on one of our days there , Katie said let’s get married next year and I said I will if we have it here.
We were back in 2 days seeing our wedding organiser and the date was set .
Tell us about your wedding planning journey …
Our family and friends are all over the UK, Ireland , Scotland and Australia so we had to make sure everyone had
enough notice to plan for our day as we wanted as many of them to attend as possible.
We set the date for the first weekend in May 2019 so we had over 16 months to get it all done.
We went to a wedding fair at the Castle and met all of their recommended suppliers so on one day we had booked
our photographer, wedding cake supplier, florist and wedding venue designers.
We had already booked our band and of course our Piper to get our party started for the evening.
The final touches were just getting ourselves ready – so dresses, shoes rings etc could all be done at a more leisurely
Any special touches/DIY?
Our only DIY was preparing the favours for our guests, which we kept simple but everyone loved them.
The ladies had an Anne Boylen compact and the men a small hip bottle of irish whisky – all in lovely pouches with a special message of thanks. ( it was made much easier for us as our 2 best women had the job of preparing them)
What was the theme /colour palette of your Big Day?
We decided on purple as it is a regal colour and one we love.
We incorporated the colour in the decoration of the venue, the flowers which also had green and blue thistles to represent our heritage and we had our cake decorated to match our wedding invitations.
What was the best bit of your day?
There were so many so it’s hard to choose, but one of the highlights for us was having the Piper lead our guests
through the castle to the evening party venue.
As we walked through the grounds we had a spectacular double rainbow suddenly appear over us – something we will always remember.
Is there anything you would do differently?
The last few days before the wedding we had a lot of family/friends arrive – which was great but also exhausting.
In hindsight we would have been better to spend a quiet day or two away to prepare for the big day .
What advice would you give to other couples getting married?
Give yourselves enough time to plan and let your guests know as soon as you have the date to avoid any
Also attending a wedding fair is a great way to get a lot of your suppliers booked in one hit – it saves a lot of time in the long run.
If you can get your best man/woman /bridesmaid roped in to help and that can take away some of the stress as well.
But the most important thing is to relax and enjoy your day – it will possibly be the best day of your life.
Thanks so much to Helen for sharing this incredible Kent Wedding.
