A Step back in Time – Regency Wedding – Images by My Heart Skipped

Today I am thrilled to take you a step back in time to share the  Regency Wedding of Simon and Neralie captured beautifully and in period style by My Heart Skipped.

London based Lucy Williams of My Heart Skipped specialises in photographing people. Capturing the minutiae of life in all its glorious, magical detail is her passion.

She says “You know that moment, that look, those extraordinary nanoseconds that define the uniqueness of you, your family and the momentous moments in your life. Those are the days that make My Heart Skip.”

Lucy shares her recollection of her time with the couple,

‘We’re having a Regency wedding’ Simon and Neralie told me and I just knew it would be a wonderful, eclectic day full of charm and eccentricities; just like them!”

“Neralie is an archaeologist and Simon is a copywriter and creative director, and they chose a Regency theme for their Big Day.”

“They sourced everything for their wedding from amazing bespoke suppliers;  and Neralie’s Regency wedding dress and Simon’s 95th Rifles uniform were handmade especially for them in authentic style and materials.”

“They chose Grove House as the perfect location to whisk their guests right back to the 19th century and even had an amazingly talented silhouette artist Alison Russell on hand to capture family and friends throughout the day.”

“Simon and Neralie’s  wedding was a joy to photograph with their silk and velvet outfits and all of  their bespoke detailing.”

“The bridal party photographs in the wood panelled room are some of my favourite group shots ever. They are more formal shots than I’d usually shoot because we wanted them to be very much in keeping with painterly portraits from bygone eras.”

“I used a long exposure (a similar technique to that of early photographers) to capture the painterly light falling across them from the North-facing windows  and I love that they all have a similar ‘still’ gaze to traditional painted groups of an original Regency Wedding.”

Simon, the Groom says about his Big Day “Don’t blame us. Blame the friend who suggested (although it felt more like insisted) that our wedding have “a theme”. So we had a theme.”

“One of the many pleasant surprises as we first got to know each other was our mutual love for the works of Jane Austen. Hence eventually we decided on a Regency Wedding. But how to achieve it?”

“There was a neat division of roles for the future Bride and Groom. Neralie did most of the research; and I did most of the organising. And that’s why it is the Groom, perhaps unusually, who has ended up writing this piece.”

“I approached the task much like a photographic shoot (I work in advertising). What do we need? A location. Lead actors. And extras. Photographers. Props. Catering. And some luck with the weather!”

“While our Regency Wedding theme made some of our decisions easy, finding suppliers was exhausting.”

“Our venue was Grove House, a Georgian villa in the grounds of Roehampton University, close to Richmond Park and the River Thames.”

” Neralie commissioned a Regency corset, Empire Line dress in Champagne silk and a pelisse in Burgundy silk velvet. My Best Man and I commissioned the dark green uniforms of an officer and enlisted man in the 95th Rifles (think: Sean Bean in “Sharpe”).”

“Of course photography had yet to be invented in the early nineteenth century; but it had to be a vital part of our planning. Even the strongest memories fade. And we were determined to have the most evocative record possible – not just for ourselves but for those who couldn’t make it in person on the day, such as Neralie’s parents in Australia.”

“We also found a medium of recording the event more in keeping with the Regency theme: a silhouette artist. She was a real crowd-pleaser, with many of our guests taking home a portrait memento of themselves.”

“Also in keeping was an outdoor lamb roast, and in the evening, a band for the period English country dancing.”

“It is hard to choose which details we and the guests enjoyed the most.”

“For Neralie, being laced into her corset and dressed in chemise, dress and pelisse by her friends was wonderful.”

“Cutting the cake with the sword I’d had made was another splendid moment. Speaking of the cake, we also involved our guests in the day.”

“A friend had designed the invitations (in a period typeface, of course); another played guitar before the Ceremony; and my sister-in-law made the cake.”

“Overall, we had wanted our wedding to be memorable, relaxed and, above all, fun. It was all that and more. Even the mid-September weather behaved impeccably. Plenty of sun. But also a strategically placed downpour on the Bride and Groom for the amusement of the guests sheltering on Grove House terrace….unforgettable!”

Thank you to Lucy for letting me share this exquisite day with every detail captured so originally transporting us back to a bygone day.
