Jason says of the couple and their day…
Sometimes, everything just falls into place. Some weddings are easier than others and what I mean by that is that it just happens that everything is clicking – all the doors are open. All the lights are green.
Everybody’s on the same page and everybody’s having a good day. It’s really working out.
It takes a certain kind of energy to trigger this.
I met Lara and Harry around a year before their wedding. I fell in love with them both straight away.
What immediately struck me about them was their energy. A touch-paper to an explosive and exciting universe that they were part of.
Something they were (and are) connected to without trying too hard. Young lovers in an old fashioned kind of love.
Humble, exciting, and genuine, and full of the nicest kind of confidence.
I knew early on that I wanted to be part of their day. I knew that their wedding was going to be something special but it wasn’t until I was bound up in the day that I could really tell what kind of magical that was going to be.
They flew back to New York where they live, and we arranged to find a snippet of time when we could get together for their Together Session – the pre-wedding shoot I do for all of my couples.
That proved difficult, of course – timings were off (me) – The weather was crummy on one occasion in between flights and schedules, but I never worry about it when it goes like this. L & H were pretty chilled out about it too.
We arranged to do the shoot the next time they were back, which happened to be a few days before the wedding.
You can see that beautiful Together Session here.
I think we talked a fair bit that week. The word people seemed to be using the most was ‘Burst’, as in: I think I’m probably going to burst. The energy was infectious.
By the time the day turned around I actually felt like I was going to burst.
I loved this wedding. It rained and nobody really noticed. Well they did, but they kind of made it a part of it.
There was a surprise (organised by Lara) stand up soulful sing along in the church.
Already the day was unfolding into a stylish and charming glamour-fest.
There were musicians everywhere, jamming contemporary hip-hop tunes on acoustic guitars, to singer songwriters, to soul funk party. filling in the gaps, and some great fun photography everywhere I went.
I got some of my favourite portraits from any wedding and it was lashing down with rain the whole time.
Family everywhere, filling in the gaps and just making you want to be adopted into it all.
Marryoke, video ( I really loved the vid from Mike – you should check it out here) some of the best catering there is courtesy of Joe Keeley and my favourite wedding planners of all time.
Dancing, dance/offs, melting marshmallows in a corner of the Tipi, some amazingly heartfelt and emotional speeches, and a fizzing sparkler send off.
By the time I got home it was 1 o’clock, and I just wanted to go and do it all over again.
I hand over o beautiful Bride Lara…
How did you meet?
We met at university – King’s College London. Harry stalked me till I gave in and it went from there.
Tell us about the Engagement…
Poor Harry had all his plans ruined by mother nature!
He has planned to take me to Block Island for the weekend, however a lovely hurricane decided to hit New York which meant all Ferrys to/from the island were cancelled.
He had to make last minute plans so he was up at 4am searching for places to go as had already asked my parents and knew he had to propose that weekend!
He found a gorgeous mountain resort in upstate New York (which reminded me of the Dirty Dancing summer house!).
We went hiking one afternoon and poor Harry even dropped the ring box trying to climb the rocks .
(I was wondering why he was taking so long to catch up to me but then he popped the question.
He had engraved “Marry Me” on a shell that that we saved from our first holiday together in Portugal 9 years ago!
I didn’t even know he kept it all those years.
Tell us about your wedding planning journey…
Planning a wedding from another country across the pond could be tricky – or you could just have the best mother of a wedding planner that it makes it all very smooth and fun!
Not sure what we would have done without my family – my mum helping with EVERY logistic and my dad HAND MAKING all of our amazing props and signs. We loved every minute of the planning.
What was the best bit of your day?
Everything!! Although nothing beats walking down the aisle.
I think also singing the first hymn was when it all felt very real!
Were there any surprises on the day?
Apart from the rain Harry had a big surprise with my flash mob gospel choir in the church
What advice would you give to other couples getting married?
Just enjoy every second – from the planning right through to the actual day.
Also keep it small so you can really enjoy seeing everyone on the day!
It goes so fast and seems like a whirlwind!
