Today I am thrilled to share this gorgeous Sussex Barn Wedding with a retro Wedding Dress, sunflowers and personal touches.
Images of the day were captured by Fitzgerald Photographic.
Clare FitzGerald is a Sussex based wedding photographer living near to Eastbourne & Brighton, with her husband, 2 young children & cheeky chocolate Labrador.
She says of her work…
“I love photographing weddings and believe in building a relationship with my couples and getting to know your story; after all I will be closely by your side for most of the day!”
“I aim to be discreet, letting the events of the day catch my eye so that I can document the individual character, detail & emotion of your wedding in a relaxed, creative & fun way!”
“I first met Lauren & Marc a year before their wedding date at the Sussex Barn wedding fair. They seemed like a lovely couple & I enjoyed chatting with them about their plans for the day.”
They took me by surprise by saying they wanted to book me there and then, a first for me at a wedding fair!”
Apparently they had been following me on facebook and just wanted to meet me in person before booking!”
I was really looking forward to this day as the ceremony & reception venues are both lovely; especially the Sussex Barn as it’s only 5 minutes from where I live!”
I was slightly concerned for the couple as the summer weather was not looking favourable and the reception was heavily based on being outside with the backdrop of the barn and Sussex countryside. However the summer sun delivered!”
“Marc & Lauren were such a relaxed couple that this reflected in being a fun day for all!”
I hand over to the lovely Bride Lauren to share the couples story…
How did you meet?
“We originally met back at school when we were 14.”
“We’d liked each other when we were 16 and even had a bit of a kiss at the school Valentines’ ball, but you know what it’s like to be a teenager – we were too nervous to speak to each other afterwards and then went to different Sixth Forms and that was that.”
“We got back in touch again when we were about 23 (yes, we must admit is was through the revolution of Facebook !) and chatted for a few months, but with one of us in London and the other in Brighton whilst we liked each other it didn’t cross our minds anything much would happen.”
“Marc was staying down in Brighton that Christmas so we arranged to meet for a drink on Christmas Eve – and five hours later we were still chatting away as old friends! And we’ve been together ever since that night!”
When did you get engaged?
“We both knew early on that we’d met the person we’d spend the rest of our lives with, and in that sense we knew there was no rush to get married, although there were a couple of occasions in our first year that apparently Marc nearly proposed off-the-cuff without a ring!”
“Marc ended up proposing after four years together at sunset on the Brighton Wheel.”
“Unfortunately, the situation was unwittingly made more nerve-wracking for him as one of my brothers’ had just surprised his girlfriend by proposing the week before, before moving back to the UK from the States.”
“The night before Marc proposed we met him for a drink, and spent the whole night talking about proposals and weddings, with me bleating on about how I hoped my future engagement ring would be a ruby ring.”
“Unbeknownst to me, Marc had JUST picked up my engagement ring and had it in his bag all evening – he’d even spookily chosen me a ruby ring despite me never having mentioning wanting one before.”
“Needless-to-say, the next day he told me that he’d wanted to throttle me the night before!”
Tell us about your wedding planning journey
“We were engaged for 18 months before we started planning our wedding.”
“This was mainly due to us saving up to buy our first property. We also wanted to take our time and choose the perfect venue for us.”
“We looked at a few venues but we instantly fell in love with The Sussex Barn in Hellingly, not only because of its rustic charm but also the beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere.
“We were also happy that we could bring in our own caterers and decorate the barn, making the day it unique to us.”
“I was really proud of the job I did in choosing the decorations, favours and personal touches which complemented Lucy’s (Florist on the Farm) flower decorations in the barn.”
“In the end we didn’t end up completing the sale of our Flat until a couple of months before the wedding.”
“This meant the lead up to the wedding was a little more hectic than first planned!”
“Although these were a couple of stressful months, all the wedding plans came together and we had the perfect day with all our friends and family.”
When did you get married?
“We got married this August just gone.”
“We wanted a summer wedding out in the countryside and so wanted to guarantee a sunny day – well as much as you can with the Great British weather!”
“Luckily it paid off and we had a gloriously sunny day tucked between two days of horrendous rain!”
What was the best bit of your day?
“Once the speeches were over and the ‘formalities’ of the day were finished with, we were really able to relax.”
“Taking the advice of our fantastic photographer Clare, we made sure we took a couple of minutes out for ourselves to stand back and just take in everything around us.”
“It was so nice to see all the people we care about come together in one place, to share our special day with us.”
“Such an occasion really lets you appreciate the people in your life and shows you how supportive and loving your friends and family really are.”
What advice would you give to other couples getting married?
“Don’t sweat the small stuff! Take a step back and enjoy everything that is going on as the day completely flies by! Don’t forget to eat!!”
“Things might not go exactly as planned on the day but it doesn’t really matter because there’s nothing more important than your special day, and everyone is there to support the two of you and celebrate your love.”
Thank you so much to Clare for sharing this gorgeous Sussex Barn Wedding.
The overwhelming sense that oozes from the images is of how laid back and relaxed the day is.
With a combination of rustic venue with homespun decoration, wildflowers and garden games, this day suits the Bride and Groom to a tee as a beautiful reflection of their personalities.
