A Vintage glamour inspired Chelsea Wedding with a Vivienne Westwood Gown

Today I am thrilled to share this gorgeous Vintage glamour inspired Chelsea Wedding with a Vivienne Westwood Gown.

The couple are James and Melanie and they wanted a small celebration with family and friends with an intimate luxury flair.

Images were captured by Jonny Barratt Photography.

Jonny Barratt is a Cotswolds wedding photographer living in Gloucestershire, England.

He describes his style as relaxed, unobtrusive and fun with his roots in photojournalism.

Whilst he is well informed on who’s going to be where and the timings of the day, he doesn’t actually plan anything. he prefers to be in the moment and let it happen.

Capturing the emotion and details of a wedding is done without bossing people around or setting up loads of equipment.

His photography tells true stories, shows real life and genuine emotion.

I hand over to beautiful Bride Melanie…

How did you meet?

Our eyes met across the room of SGS1 at Law School in Nottingham in 2003 – it was love at first sight!

We had many years of travelling up and down the country to see each other between Preston in Lancashire, Plymouth in Devon and Balham in London until Melanie moved to London in 2007 just as the financial crisis hit.

Is there a proposal story?

Jim proposed on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in 2011, we were staying in Sausalito which is a cute town opposite San Francisco.

Our holiday took in San Francisco, San Diego and our friend’s wedding later that week down the coast, with lots of cool trips in between to Hearst Castle, the Madonna Inn in San Louis Obispo and Alcatraz!

We hadn’t quite banked on the San Francisco fog being as cold as it was so having brought lots of hot weather gear for LA we were wearing a strange mix of layers of many summer clothes.

I was trying to wrestle the camera bag off Jim to take a photo unbeknownst to me the ring was hidden inside the bag.

Jim had smuggled it all the way from London and I didn’t have a clue!

Jim didn’t have a specific plan for the proposal but was intending to do it at some point that day.

We were heading to lunch at a gorgeous restaurant in the Mission District of San Fran called Foreign Cinema.

As I might have spied the ring box during the wrestle, Jim got down on one knee there and then and proposed with a painstakingly ‘designed by Jim’ diamond vintage-feel solitaire ring which I really love.

With our son, Theo coming along in 2014, it took us until 2018 to finally plan our wedding but it was all worth it!

What was your wedding inspiration?

We love a vintage glamour feel and tied that in with the look of the day and our venues.

Our Wedding ceremony was at the Chelsea Old Town Hall followed by a reception at the Ivy Chelsea Garden – not too far from Balham where we live.

We were very lucky to have the gorgeous private room at the Ivy Chelsea Garden which is very instagrammable.

The walls are adorned with beautiful botanical prints in rainbow colours and it really tied in with my dress and the flowers on the day.

We are also thrilled with the photos taken at the reception which were beautifully shot by Jonny in quite difficult conditions due to the subtle lighting.

We were also able to get some fantastic shots in the garden at the Ivy Chelsea Garden which was great – it is such a beautiful space for a small wedding.

Any advice for those planning their wedding now?

There is a few pieces of advice we have.

All the to do lists come together in the end so don’t stress.

Don’t sweat about sticking to traditions – in the end we didn’t have a cake which was lucky as I don’t think anyone could have fitted any more food in after the feast at the Ivy Chelsea Garden!

Also the day goes by so quickly so enjoy every moment.

Bridal Gown – Vivienne Westwood

I loved my Vivienne Westwood dress (Cocotte) the moment I tried it on at the Vivienne Westwood Couture Davies Street store in Mayfair London.

Having tried on a couple of other dresses, this one was definitely ‘the one’! I really liked the idea of having some colour on the dress and thought the hand painted flower design was beautiful and it really tied in with the botanical theme of the Ivy Chelsea Garden room where we had our reception.

The service at Vivienne Westwood Couture particularly from Silvana was amazing, everything was made to measure and the whole process from start to finish was a dream!

Groom’s suit –  Bespoke Hackett suit and Gucci tie and pocket square and Thomas Pink shirt –  we had fun picking out the combo!
