An intimate Scottish Destination Wedding in Edinburgh with a Rock n Roll stroll

Today I am excited to share this incredible intimate Scottish Destination Wedding in Edinburgh with a Rock n Roll stroll.

Kristy and Dave got married at Dalhousie Castle in Edinburgh before taking to the streets of Edinburgh to capture some amazing memories.

Images were captured by Stuart Craig Photography.

Stuart Craig is one of the leading wedding photographers in Scotland and he covers weddings and civil partnerships throughout the country.

He is based in Dunfermline.

I hand over to Stuart to share his recollection of the couple…

“The newly weds eloped from Detroit, USA to follow their dream of having a ceremony in a real Scottish Castle.”

“Only myself, Phil from Solar Weddings, a piper and the humanist celebrant witnessed a baby owl deliver the rings as the happy couple said their vows.”

“After thanking the birds, we headed into the Royal Mile for a rock n roll stroll in Edinburgh’s most famous street and turned a few heads, it was wicked!”

“Special thanks to the Ghost Bus Tours who kindly allowed us to board for some spooky photographs.”

“It was irresistible opportunity so we are grateful they were so accommodating for us.”

I now hand over to stunning Bride Kristy to share the couples story…

“We got engaged March 22nd, 2015; and the planning started fairly quickly afterwards.”

“We had previously decided when we were at a friends very traditional yet beautiful wedding, we wanted something more unique.”

“We wanted to be married in a castle, and although there are castles in the States, they are just no where as near full of history and still incredible to see.”

“Initially it seemed very simple, I found Celtic Weddings and they provided me with a list of castles that could accommodate a 2 person wedding.”

“We knew that the ceremony and the trip was what we truly wanted and decided to not bring friends and family.”

“We still feel like this decision was absolutely worth it and allowed us to fully enjoy all the little moments and not have additional stress of coordinating others especially in another country.”

“We planned to have a reception at the Rust Belt Market (this is where we met, got engaged, and is right around the block from us).”

“Our reception is actually August 6th; we picked this day so that there would be enough time for Stuart and Phil to get our pictures/videos back to us so that we could have them displayed at the reception.”

“After researching the castles provided through the recommendations of Celtic Weddings  we were quick to narrow it down to Dalhousie Castle once we learned an owl could deliver our rings to us.”

“That is just completely unheard of over here; plus Bonnie the Barnowl was so adorable.”

“I began to start the planning and communicating with their wedding coordinator.”

Things were a little bumpy at times through simple logistics like the time difference between the States and Scotland so trying to communicate was always on a delay”

There were many tricky moments along the way and at times I was disappointed with communication, but the ceremony and castle were everything we could have ever dreamed of and we would do it over again there.”

“So its safe to say it was quite a journey to plan a wedding internationally especially to a country we had never even been to.”

“After securing the location came all the logistics; hair/make up, photography, flowers, videography, who was going to marry us.”

“I started just looking up anything I could find online about Dalhousie castle and I found a few people on Instagram.”

“This is essentially how I found Stuart., our Photographer, q photo of his had been on instagram and so I contacted him”

“. I continued to do this and contact a variety of people who I thought could be of help.”

“Stuart was excellent from the start and allowed me to email with another US couple that he had photographed at Dalhousie.”

“From there he connected me with Phil from Solar Weddings.”

“The couple that I began to email with shared their advice and highly recommended a specific make up artist, this is a whole other story.”

“One thing I was really struggling was to find someone who could do flowers for us there since we only needed a bouquet and a boutonnière.”

“I love flowers and felt like my bouquet was really important and I knew shipping flowers would be a pain and over priced.”

“I ended up turing to etsy and found a bouquet that I could use for the ceremony and will now be our center piece for our table at our reception.”

“So during the whole planning process we thought we would have an easier time just us getting married in Scotland following our hearts followed by a reception at home. Boy were we wrong!”

“Essentially we ended up planning 2 weddings, BUT it was totally worth it.”

“The day of our ceremony in Scotland was pretty tiring and we had the joy of doing what we wanted to and not worrying about anyone else.”

“I almost feel bad for couples getting married and do everything in the same day – it seems so exhausting to take care of yourselves, coordinate guests, do the dinner, pictures, dance, ect.”

“I’ve read too often that people don’t even remember all their day because it was so much.”

“In that sense I feel like we seriously won and got to fully enjoy every moment together with no other worries.”

“The time we spent with the ceremony was so magical and something we were able to share intimately with only ourselves.”

“We also needed someone to marry us and I used the list of recommended services that Dalhousie provides.”

“This part was actually pretty simple and went great.”

“I contacted Marilyn from the Scottish Humanist Society and she was amazing right away.”

“We really had no idea what we wanted to have in our ceremony and she helped guide us resulting in a very meaningful ceremony.”

“We had ordered a quaich online and had it engraved, and we also did a traditional handfasting during our ceremony.”

“Marilyn was incredible; always had great communication, shared her experiences, gave ideas and was easy to get along with.”

“So back to the hair/make up. I had my hair and make up artist who I see locally do a trial run.”

“We took pictures of the steps along the way and I had shared them with the artist I had made arrangements with.”

“Well, we had emailed for about 8-10 months securing the payment and seeing what I was hoping for the day.”

“On the day of, someone completely different showed up who was NOT my hair/make up artist.”

“At that point I had no choice but to just roll with it. Sadly, neither my hair or make up turned out how I wanted.”

“My hair fell out only a couple hours into the day and my make up was super pale, resulting in Stuart having to touch up my face in the pictures so that my skin tone would match.”

“I was so anxious and nervous when getting ready, there was no chance to get sad or turn into a crazy Bride.”

“We had met with Stuart the night before to go over the plans for the photos and he suggested heading to the Royal Mile, and we are so grateful for his suggestion.”

“This was by far one of the highlights of our day.”

“Since our outfits were not traditional wedding gear, people were definitely watching us trying to figure why we were getting photographed.”

“”Stuart knew all the best places to stop for a quick photo and was so efficient.”

“Really for both of us, the moment of walking behind the bagpipe player to greet each other was such an indescribable moment.”

“We had been planning a wedding we had no real idea what it was going to look like for over a year and we were finally in that moment; we both had tears.”

“Another amazing highlight was Bonnie the owl successfully delivering our rings!”

“We had talked about it for so long with so many people, we couldn’t believe it was actually happening.”

“Sharing this with you, I feel like we pulled off the most meaningful wedding we could have for our vision.”

“After mentioning our wedding outfits, I should share how we got to the look we accomplished.”

“Clearly we are not traditional not to mention I kinda hate dresses but I knew I wanted a black wedding dress.”

“Bridal shops here don’t carry such a thing and after going to a few bridal stores, I knew that process was not for me.”

“Thankfully a friend recommended a dress maker.”

“I met with Julie in November and by mid April my dress was complete.”

“She was amazing to work with and held my hand through the whole process.”

“I know nothing about dresses nor did I really want to learn.”

“She was able to take my descriptions and a few sample pictures and create every inner goth girls dream wedding dress.”

“Considering the style of my dress, my husband knew he wanted something with some victorian looking style. He got lucky and just like that found his wedding suit online.”

Our Advice to others (my two best friends are getting married right now, so I have shared a few of these already).

“Worry most importantly about what the two of you want and not what anyone else says.

“When you focus on what you want, sometimes this includes not having traditional aspects of a wedding. That is just ok!”

“Slow down – plan time to be together and not just following a schedule; it happens way too fast.”

“Plan together – it seems too often brides lead every step of the way. We wanted this experience to reflect our thoughts and wishes.”

“Get a good nights sleep the night before- don’t be jetlagged like we were!”

“We had to take a nap at 8:00pm on our wedding night (haha) but we woke back up and walked around the castle drinking champagne.”

Thank you so much to Stuart for sharing this awesome Scottish Destination Wedding and to the couple for sharing their story.

We want our Wedding Days to be both a reflection of ourselves and not all weddings or people fit in a one fits all box,

Becky’s alternative gown is stunning and the couples matching Wedding converse are fabulous.

Love the owl ring delivery, its just adds the air of magic and how wonderful for the couple to be able to fulfil their dreams in such a special and memorable way.
