“Bring Me Sunshine” – A Rainy Wedding Day in the Cheviot Hills

Whilst inclement weather is not what we hope for on our Wedding days, this lovely Wedding shot in the Cheviot Hills shows that having a rainy wedding day doesn’t really matter, love brings us sunshine.

Photographer Jamie Penfold battled against first torrential rain and then fog to capture Lynne and Nick’s wedding but with some colourful umbrellas and a can do attitude the day was saved.

Jamie shares his recollections of the day,

“The rain is torrential and all I can think is “Where will we do the pictures?  Everything is outside!”

“Thankfully I’d invested in several bright umbrellas.  Rain?  Pah!!!! So this is the story of Lynne and Nick’s wedding day.”

“I love working with people like Lynne and Nick.  Both terrified of the camera, neither confident getting their photo taken.”

“I did their pre wedding shoot on an idyilic farm in Oxfordshire and they were naturals.  So I had no worries about how they would cope!”

“As I drove away from Tyneside on one of the few roads that wasn’t blocked by floodwater, the rain began to ease.”

“By the time I was near Alnwick it had stop but as I got closer to Wooler the rain had been replaced by thick fog.”

“This was a real shame because College Valley is one of the most naturally stunning places I have ever visited.  Its safe to say I wouldn’t be using the stunning views as a backdrop!”

“Off the main road and several miles along a twisting single track road is Cuddystone Hall, a small little venue situated at the fork in the road.  It appeared out of the mist like a ghost!”

“Next to it the marquee was set up which would stage the wedding breakfast.  Outside Nick chatted to guests as they arrived.”

“There was a slight hint of nerves but other than that he seemed calm.  Everyone looked nervously at the sky.  Several commented to me “Bet you would like sunshine?”

“Normally I love the sunshine but a bit of cloud cover is always welcome when shooting a wedding but this was ridiculous! No matter the rain was holding off.”

“Inside the hall, the guests took their seats and the harpist began playing.”

“Then out of the mist came the horse and carriage that would bring Lynne to the hall.”

“It was haunting watching them coming out of the fog.  You could hear the hooves a long time before they appeared.  Several minutes later they were back with Lynne.  She nervously waved at me and carefully climbed out of the carriage.”

“Keeping her dress off the wet ground she made her way into the hall and made her way down the aisle treading on petals scattered/thrown by her flower girl and page boy.”

“The ceremony was a lovely light hearted affair with a dash of emotion chucked in for good measure.”

“As registrars go, Lynne and Nick’s was top drawer.  She was so friendly, very approachable and so pro photography.  She also added a bit of humour to the ceremony. Certainly helped with calming nerves.”

“As the ceremony was finishing I peaked outside the main doors and could see the other side of the valley for the first time.  Excellent….my joy was short-lived.”

“The fog/cloud had lifted but now it was chucking it down with rain!  One guest walked past me and cheerfully said “ooh, you’ve had it!”

“No way! I never let a bit of rain spoil a wedding…although this was torrential!  But I knew that even in this weather I could get some amazing shots.”

“So armed with a few umbrellas we ventured out, and to be honest I think the rain helped as it took Lynne and Nick’s minds off the idea of getting their photos taken, they were too busy concentrating on not getting wet.”

“My view on rain is there is nothing we can do to control the weather; if it rains, it rains.  My main worry is always hair and make-up.”

“Obviously if the rain is anything like it was on “Thunder thursday” back in 2012, there’s no way you’d get outside.” “But as long as we carry the dress, take precautions and have an umbrella all is going to be ok!  I was delighted with the shots we got…they looked atmospheric, moody but most of all romantic!”

“Inside the marquee the room was decorated with purple tartan, lavenders, candles and purple ribbons.”

“The table names were right up my street!  Nick is a pilot so the tables were all named after classic British aircraft.  I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a plane geek/bore! ”

“Tables such as Spitfire, Avro Lancaster and (my favourite) Avro Vulcan were dotted around the room as the guests dried off and began to take their seats.” “Inside the marquee you’d never have realised what the weather was like outside!  It was nice and snug in there!”

“After the speeches and food the marquee was quickly turned around ready for the disco and Ceilidh.”

“Lynne and Nick had made no secret of how uncomfortable they were at the thought of their first dance but they danced and twirled around the floor like they were on Strictly Come Dancing!”

“And their choice of song couldn’t have been more appropriate….Bring Me Sunshine!  This version was by The Jive Aces so it started slowly before swinging into a fast paced ditty!  And with that the Ceilidh band struck up and the floor filled up!”
