Today I am thrilled to share these awe inspiring and frankly breathtaking Wedding and celebration cakes from The Stonehouse Bakery.
This small craft bakery run by Frances Auty is based in the village of Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, and is specialist in small batch breads, sourdoughs and natural celebration cakes.
She tells us all about her blossoming Business…
Who are you, and what do you do?
My name is Frances and I am a baker and cake decorator, as well as being a part time teacher.
Tell us why, and when you started your Business…
I have been baking for friends and family since I was 11 and am entirely self taught.
For some years I have been sharing my bakes for friends and family on this bake, but bit the bullet and started my own business last year.
Tell us what inspires you…
I am inspired by many everyday things, all of the time: patterns and colour in nature; architecture; fashion; many fellow bakers and cake decorators on social media, especially from around the world on Instagram.
Do trends influence you?
Some trends do influence my work, although I like to give cake finishes my own unique touch.
I firmly believe that most of the time less is more, especially with the finish on a wedding cake.
Most recent trends have been the use of gold and silver leaf and the blending of coloured buttercreams.
What is your favourite Wedding style?
My favourite wedding style is probably a buttercream finish, touches of gold or silver and fresh flowers: simple and elegant but eye catching.
Whats you favourite thing about working with Weddings?
I love being part of someone’s special day. It is one of the most significant days of your life, and a lot rests on getting the details right.
it is an honour to be part of the process and for people to feel confident that i can deliver their dream cake.
I love getting to know couples, finding out what flavours and finishes they like, what sort of day they are planning, and so on. It’s even better when they come back for a christening or naming day cake.
What would be your perfect day off?
My perfect day off would be a lie in followed by a day trip with my family and a nice lunch out, with some coffee and cake and a wee bit of shopping thrown in.
What is your greatest achievement?
I think my greatest achievement is starting up the bakery as a single mum whilst also working as a secondary school teacher three days a week.
It is a lot to juggle but the passion to be the best that I can and the ability to dig deep for that extra energy has allowed me to steadily gain a reputation for beautiful and delicious cakes and breads that use only the best of ingredients.
What are your plans for the future of the Business?
I hope to add a small extension to my house so that I can get a bread oven and larger mixer so that I can increase capacity.
I would like to run bread and pasta making, and cake decorating classes from this new space. Perhaps, one day, I will have premises.
I have made many friends through Instagram, and find that bakers are very generous with their time and advice, always encouraging and supportive.
This has really pushed my technical skills and knowledge along, and given me more confidence.
For years I focused on fondant covered cakes, but started to move away from that.
Now, I exclusively decorate cakes with buttercreams and other frostings, use fresh (and sometimes edible) flowers, nuts, fruits, berries, and so on to decorate cakes.
I find the process of decorating with these more natural ingredients to be far more creatively satisfying, not mention, much tastier.
