Today I am delighted to spotlight on the work of Sofie Boons, designer of custom made wedding and engagement rings for couples that are looking for something slightly different than the traditional engagement ring or gold wedding band.
She finds inspiration in substances, scents and science.
The Brand is based in London.
I pass over to Sofie to tell you all about herself…
Who are you, and what do you do?
“I am Sofie Boons, a jewellery designer based in London and I create jewellery that tells stories.”
“Within my work I have two main interest, the alchemical and designing for people.”
“One of the favourite thing I design, being crazy about love and weddings, is designing custom made wedding and engagement rings for couples that are looking for something slightly different than the traditional engagement ring or gold wedding band.”
“I am specialised in providing a service for couples tailored to their budget and focussed on creating something unique and special just for them.”
“To tell you a bit more about the process, I generally start by interviewing the couple to identify their style, get to know their love story and what they are looking for from their wedding rings.”
“I then take some time to put pen to paper and design some first ideas in response to the interview.”
“These ideas are then discussed in a catch-up meeting, allowing me to improve the design before producing some models. I then finally work very closely with the couple to complete the design and produce the piece(s) by hand in my own studio.”
When and why did you start your Company?
“I started my company in March of this year after having finished my Master’s degree in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery at the Royal College of Art.”
“I have been designing and making jewellery for over 5 years now and after completing my education I could not wait to start my own company, allowing me to spend all of my time on doing what I love to do.”
What inspires you?
“For my general collections, I find inspiration in materials, the field of science and the world of scents, perfumes and smells.”
“For my bespoke work, I am inspired by the people who are going to wear the pieces. Hearing their story sparks my imagination and becomes the main inspiration for the piece.”
“All of my handmade pieces of jewellery therefore tell a story, embody a concept or illustrate an idea – and always visualise the invisible.”
Do trends influence your work?
“Not necessarily. Even though I am fascinated by new technologies, materials and techniques and I happily experiment and incorporate those in my work, I do not really tend to follow trends intently.”
“I aspire to design timeless pieces, that do not only touch people by their appearance but most importantly become treasured because of the idea they represent, their meaning and their emotional value.”
What is your greatest achievement?
“The greatest achievement I have had with my work is when couples come back to me and tell me that their wedding rings or engagement ring is more perfect for them than they ever hoped it could be and that they will cherish it for the rest of their lives.”
“I cannot describe the feeling of knowing that your work and design can be so important to another person, it makes me ecstatic.”
What do you see as the future of your Company?
“Ideally I would like to continue the way I am working now.”
“Getting to know people and designing for them gives me the greatest happiness and if my business in the future would allow me to do just that every single day, than I will be a very grateful and happy person!”
Thank you so much to Sofie for sharing her beautiful work.
Whilst traditional wedding rings are beautiful, sometimes couples want something that a little bit more expresses who they are, and these pieces are really unusual and have an amazing connection to who Sofie clients are as people.
