Today I am thrilled to share the work of Siobhan MacKenzie and her incredible fashion forward bespoke kilts which are just perfection for the Groom looking for something just a little bit special.
Siobhan was born and raised in The Black Isle in the Highlands of Scotland before moving at the age of seventeen to embark upon a fashion education in Glasgow.
Since she was very young she had always had a strong flair for fashion, art and creativity.
By the early age of ten years old she was entirely certain of the career she sought to follow and from there watched a burning desire of ambition unfold.
She bought her first sewing machine when she was thirteen and began to work diligently in order to achieve her goals aided by passion and sheer determination.
Today her concept is to progress something as distinctively beautiful as the kilt and tartan forward with the fashion world and bring Scottish Dress into the 21st century by breaking the rules of tradition with truly innovative bespoke and contemporary kilts.
I hand over to the designer to share her story…
Who are you, and what do you do?
“I am Siobhan Mackenzie – my company specialises in bespoke & contemporary kilts with the aim to bring Scottish dress into the 21st century by breaking the rules of tradition.”
“My innovative approach adds a modern luxury twist to the kilt.”
“I am a multi-award winning fashion designer with a Made in Scotland approach using Scottish design, textiles and manufacture with the intention of being able to create design jobs and opportunities in Scotland.”
When and why did you start your Company?
“I started the company in July 2014 – upon graduating I went straight into launching the company following the success of my Graduate Collection ‘Clan Mackenzie’.”
“I incorporated and contrasted the variations of the Mackenzie tartan with tweed, wool and velvet to create aesthetic and lustrous contrasts within kilts.”
What inspires you?
“My family have always been my leading inspirations in my life – my graduate collection inspiration came from my Highland roots and the history behind my own clan.”
“When designing bespoke kilts for clients I take the time during consultation to get to know them in order to create them a truly special ensemble.”
Do trends influence your work?
“No – I aim to set the trends and not to follow them.”
What is your greatest achievement?
“I won The Greyfriars Award 2015 – a worldwide fashion design award focusing on the quality and creativity within fashion design!”
“I am also very proud of achieving a First Class BA Honours degree in Fashion Design and Production – it was my aim since the age of ten years old to obtain a fashion design degree and have a fashion career.”
“Another great achievement for me was being the designer for Miss Scotland’s national costume for Miss World 2014 – it was an absolute honour to create her a bespoke kilt and jacket to represent her country.”
What do you see as the future of your Company?
“At present I do bespoke orders for clients – gents and ladies whether they are looking for a kilt or full kilt outfit I can create innovative and distinct luxury pieces.”
“The aim for the future is to have ready-to-wear collections of designer contemporary kilts sold online with the intention of having my own stores nationally and internationally.”
Thank you so much to Siobhan for sharing her fabulous bespoke kilts, I love her contemporary approach.
Tartan and kilts are so intricately interwoven in Scotlands history but she takes that and brings something fresh to the table, from days gone by slap bang right in the 21st century.
Perfect for the modern groom, groomsmen or wedding party.
