Floral Beautiful – Narcissus Flowers

Today I am thrilled to spotlight on the lovely Susan Shannon of Narcissus Flowers. I had the great pleasure of working with Susan and her brand of floral beautiful at the Big Fat Scottish TweetUp.

She created some lovely Centrepieces for our tables, and I am excited to focus on her Business today.

I caught up with Susan to find out what makes her tick,

Who are you, and what do you do ?

“Hi, my name is Susan Shannon and I am a freelance florist, specialising in providing beautiful, bespoke flower designs for weddings. I am based in Glasgow.”

When and why did you start your Business?

“I started my business in 2010 after the birth of my first daughter.  Like many women I found that the costs of childcare and the low wages in the florist sector made it impossible to return to work.”

“Besides this, I wanted to be at home and see my little girl grow up.  Therefore, working from home was the ideal solution and also allows me to specialise solely on my absolute favourite aspect of floristry – Weddings!”

What inspires you?

“I am inspired by almost everything around me.  From pretty gardens to the autumn leaves on the trees.  But probably the most inspiring thing is, my clients own excitement!”

“Once you start talking to a prospective bride about their own wedding and their own aspirations for the big day, the ideas just keep coming, this is by far the best part of my job.”

“I love flowers and the way that different textures, shapes and colours work together, often in surprising ways.”

“I also love looking at the work of other florists from around the world, not just the big names, but I can often be found perusing the websites of local shops in Holland and Belgium.”

“One of my favourite designers is Monike Vanden Berge, her wedding designs are very sculptural using lots of wires and non organic bits and pieces to create beautiful unique pieces.  Her style is not to everyone’s taste, but there are always some elements that can be used for more mainstream floristry.”

Do trends have a major impact on your work?

“It is very important to keep up to date with the changing trends across the whole wedding industry.  As dress styles and colours will have an effect on the choice of designs and flowers for the bridal bouquets, and venue decor will have a massive influence on table centres.”

“I find that I notice the shift in trends from year to year.  This summer for example, my brides chose predominately neutral shades of soft creams, ivory and blush pinks in beautiful massed posies.”

“The bookings I have already taken for next year seem to be moving more towards stronger shades of pinks, corals and purples with many of the bridesmaids wearing navy, black and aubergine.”

Whats your greatest accomplishment ?

“In such hard times for everyone in business, I treat every new booking as an accomplishment, and every thank you note as a great big gold star of achievement.”

“But my children aside, my greatest accomplishment is probably finally finding the courage to go it alone and start my own business.”

” After over 15 years working in some of Glasgow’s top flower shops I was all too aware of how hard times were and how difficult it would be to set up on my own.  But I’m pleased to say that my business is increasing year on year and the feedback I get from my own clients and others in the wedding industry is very positive and encouraging.”

Whats the future for your Business?

“I am presently working on a new revamped website, a fab new logo and updated marketing materials.  I am also putting together some great value packages for bride’s and groom’s on a budget.  I am looking to launch the new site in mid –January 2013 in time for the spring Wedding fayres.”

“I love working with flowers and making and designing gorgeous floral displays and as business increases I would like to have a dedicated studio space to meet brides and showcase my work.  In the meanwhile however, I will continue to work hard from home and concentrate on my growing client list and family.”

“After all these years I still get butterflies of anticipation as I walk up a bride’s driveway to deliver her flowers, Will she like them? Are they what she was looking for?”

“For this reason and numerous others, it makes my day when I find a thank you note or photo of the happy couple in my inbox!! I cannot understand how anyone could commit to being part of someone big day and not deliver on their promises!”
