Mary-Ann Griffin gives us an insight in the Brand…

Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Mary-Ann and I run a bridal accessory business, Thomasina Brides, where I handcraft exquisite bridal accessories as well as showcasing genuine vintage beauties.

Vintage components such as antique lace or jewellery often feature, so that a high percentage of my pieces are ‘one-offs’.

Perhaps you have a treasured piece of jewellery, such as an heirloom brooch or pendant, that you would like to feature in your wedding? With these I can create a bespoke bridal accessory, designed by you.

As well as these handmade pieces I also showcase  beautiful antique treasures, and have a range of stunning pre-loved accessories from 1920s tiaras through to sixties bridal gloves.

You can find a vintage gem waiting to be worn and feature in your brand new love story.

What made you start your business?

You could say that I have natural creative talent since I have always had a need to be making something, usually out of some form of textiles.

Taught to crochet, knit and sew as a girl, my hands are always busy.

So of course when planning my own wedding it felt right to make many of the accessories myself.

Since then I have been asked by friends and family to make various items for their own weddings, and an idea began to form.

When and why did you start your Company?

I have spent 17 years in an administrative job role, only letting my creative side run riot in the evenings and weekends, however that changed when I had my children and took a career break from work.

It was then that I decided to take the opportunity to go full steam ahead and set up Thomasina Brides.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by beautiful things, it could be flowers in bloom; intricate lace, or antique beadwork on a dress.

I get inspired a lot… it’s finding the time to do something with it that can be tricky.

Do trends influence your work?

I like to keep an eye on bridal trends as I want to be making accessories that brides are shopping for, however at the same time I don’t want to be producing the same as every other bridal wear company.

I like to make stylish, elegant and timeless accessories, with a nod to what is ‘on trend’.

Flower headresses are popular at the moment with brides, but rather than producing another selection of floral hair wreaths, I have found good quality, genuine vintage , wax orange blossom tiaras from the 1940s are proving popular as a unique alternative to the mainstream options.

What is your greatest achievement?

Setting up Thomasina Brides whilst caring for two under 5 year olds.

I work from home selling online via my website and I exhibit at wedding events. It’s been a fun juggling act fittting this around my children, but it’s got easier as my youngest is now at nursery.

What do you see as the future of your Company?

I would like to see Thomasina Brides become a growing brand in the wedding accessory industry, a favourite amongst brides-to-be!

Thank you to Mary-Anne for sharing her pretty Bridal accessories. I particularly love the lace hat which is bursting with personality.
