Today I am thrilled to feature a wee bit of sugar and spice and all things nice with a spotlight on Maid of Gingerbread and their Gingerbread Wedding sculptures, favours and centrepieces.
Maid of Gingerbread based in Hackney, London was established in 2010 from first venturings making a gingerbread big top from a traditional German recipe.
I had a wee chat to the lovely Emily Garland about her Business ……
Who are you and what do you do?
“My name is Emily and I create bespoke gingerbread sculptures/centre-pieces for weddings and events. I also make biscuits and edible place names/favours.Q
When and why did you start your company?
“I’ve always enjoyed baking for people, but a few years ago I began experimenting with gingerbread specifically, adapting gingerbread house templates and working out how to build different things.”
“I made a couple of pieces for friends and family, which proved really popular – particularly my edible tea-set! It all just went from there really.”
What inspires you?
“Everything can provide inspiration so I just try to stay open to ideas wherever I am.”
“I’ve always loved great architecture and design and I often find myself looking at buildings or objects and thinking “now how would I make this out of gingerbread?”
Do trends influence your work?
I enjoy finding out about the latest wedding trends and trying out new ideas, but my aim is always to make something a little bit different, so I’m not overly influenced by them.
Also, I love working with couples to make something really personal to them, so it’s more about their taste and vision.
What is your greatest achievement?
“One of my gingerbread castles was featured on Michael Buble’s Christmas show, which was pretty epic and exciting.”
What do you see as the future of your company?
“Although I still make things for other events, I’m really focusing on weddings now and have been working on a brand new wedding collection which I’m really excited about.”
“I’ve been branching out and incorporating lots of different flavours as well as gingerbread, so there’ll be something to cater for everyone’s tastes.”
“It will appear on my website at the beginning of May so stay tuned for that.”
Aren’t they beautiful and what creativity to be able to make at times complex designs from gingerbread.
Gingerbread makes us hark back to warm, seasonal times but is perfect for any time of the year and especially for those who love its delicate spiciness.
I love the Bride and Groom and the doves, perfect as Gingerbread wedding favours and how wonderful to have an alternative wedding cake with scrumptious ginger taste.
And who is just a wee bit jealous of the Buble thing…wow!
Thanks so much to Emily for sharing her designs with us today.
