Today I am thrilled to introduce Peak Tipis who produce utterly gorgeous and distinctive giant tipis for Weddings & events – a memorable and unique alternative to the traditional marquee.
If you love the great outdoors and the idea of celebrating your big day festival style is appealing, perhaps a traditional wedding venue may not be right choice for you.
Instead why not look at something more quirky and less restricted to ‘four walls’ such as a Tipi or Marquee Wedding?

Both marquee and tipi options provide a blank canvas for you to stamp your own theme and personality within for your special day, making it more personal and memorable for you and all of your guests.
Whilst white Marquees are still a very popular choice for a more formal affair; the tipi are fast emerging as the canvas structure of choice when it comes to special occasions, as your event becomes an experience in itself.
Tipi tents, also known as tepee tents, teepee tents and kåta tents, are the latest craze sweeping the nation as an exciting alternative to the traditional marquee.
The main reason for their popularity is that they offer you a chance to be different from other Weddings you have attended and the opportunity to make a real statement.
They are more than just another kind of outdoor tent, there’s a certain magic about them that makes them memorable.
This could be the versatility of having the sides raised to allow the summer breeze to flow throughout during the warmer months, or the ability to close off the ‘Great British Weather’ during the winter months with rustic doors, listening to the rain on the canvas’ whilst beside cosy open log fires.
The tipis are so versatile and can lend themselves to almost any event or arrangement.
They can be set up in a wide variety of configurations according to personal taste, guest numbers and to suit the surrounding.
Peaktipis is the business baby of Matthew Chell, along with his best friend and business partner Duncan.
Matthew and Duncan enjoyed seven years of success with their Plastering firm, Steadfast UK, where they ran large scale commercial contracts as well as smaller, local domestic jobs, but in 2011 they decided to follow their passion in life and trade their successful and reputable plastering company to start a tipi hire service.
Their passion for the outdoors, which over the years has seen the pair push themselves to the limit, taking part in The Four Inne’s for five years running – a grueling 46 mile walk , uphill and down dale from Holmfirth to Buxton.
The first year the team completed the race in 15 hours and the last, a competitive and impressive 8 hours.
Both this passion for the outdoors and living in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak District, encouraged them to pursue a completely different path in life.
The pair visited the National Outdoor show at the NEC a few years back and it was here that they first laid eyes on the tipi’s.
It was from that moment they spotted a gap in the local market, began looking into the possibilities of purchasing and importing the tipis from Sweden and despite the huge financial risk in such bleak economic times, decided to ‘Go for it’.
You could say they traded their trowels in for tipis!
Peaktipis was formed at the end of 2011 and are now the Midland’s leading supplier of giant kata tipis for Weddings and events.
The tents are based on the traditional tipis of the Sami people of Lapland and combine both modern and traditional techniques and materials to create their fantastic tipis.
Also meaning that they can withstand the elements (which is a bonus with the typical all-year-round British Weather!)
Matthew and Duncan, along with a close friend in the joinery trade from their construction days, produced and manufactured all of their own quality rustic furniture, consisting of Scandinavian pine slat tables and benches which are in keeping with the natural, earthy tones of the tipis.
The pair also have available to hire their own fully licensed bar, dance floor, catering tent, lighting effects, soft ‘chill out’ furniture and the piece de la resistance has to be their open fires pits which safely create that warm and cosy ‘open fire’ atmosphere inside the tipis – also manufactured themselves!
The Peak Tipis team says of their work….
“We have had two full season’s trading now, including several Weddings, private parties and we also erected the tipis for free at a local charitable fundraising event at Carsington reservoir in aid of cancer research in our first year.”
“Now almost at the start of our third full season, we are about to showcase our tipis to future prospective clients at our Spring Open Weekend.”
“With a busy wedding season in 2014 and some bookings already in for 2015, we have recruited a full time employee to assist with the complex set up of the tipis and also placed an order for another tent from Sweden too!”
