Today I am delighted to share the exquisite jewellery designs of Kirsteen Connell of Twinkle Twinkle Tiaras.
What a Woman Wants she should Get” is Twinkle Twinkle’s mission statement, and its one that I would like to get on board with.
Most girls like a bit of sparkle and on a recent visit to the Studio of Kirsteen Connell of Twinkle Twinkle I was almost dazzled. She makes a pretty good cup of tea too.
I asked Kirsteen all about her forward thinking Business and her plans for the future,
Who are you and what do you do?
“My name is Kirsteen Connell, I am a mother, designer, jeweller and entrepreneur.
I own a Bridal Accessory company called ‘Twinkle Twinkle Tiaras’ , where I specialise in creating bespoke designs for brides, bridal parties and clients that are looking for something ‘that little bit different’.”
“I collate with creatives on photoshoots to show new trends and how unique my products and designs are and I am always looking for new takes on vintage glamour.”
“I have also just completed a HND in jewellery design and can add goldmsmithing and silversmithing to my list of creative talents.”
Why, and when did you start your business?
“I started my business 6 years ago because I couldn’t find the accessories that I had designed in my head anywhere at any of the wedding fayres I visited, and I felt no one could understand the vision I had for my bridesmaid pieces etc.”
“As a result of this I sourced crystals, beads and findings and created my own bridemaid combs and flowergirl tiaras.”
“I even made the stationary, favours and all decorative features of the day just so it would fit into the vision I had for the day.”
“From there I taught myself the basics of hair accessory and jewellery manufacture through online tutorials and endless reading at the library and continued to design.”
“I even bought accessories and took them apart and studied them to learn the techniques.”
“From my very first wedding fayre my products were well recieved but not as much as the passion for design I had as this is something my clients said was their reason for choosing twinkle twinkle tiaras.”
“From my very first bride my one to one personal consultations in my studio have always been my businesses strength.”
“This aspect of my business will always remain and I have now started to offer consultations online via facetime and skype which are never as nice as sitting having a cuppa with a bride and sketching, but great for my clients that are not in my geographical area.”
What inspires you?
“I am inspired by many things……mostly colour and geometric shapes. My love of geometric shapes comes from my studies into the art deco period and this is one of my strongest influences.”
“I also like to think outside the box with design and sometimes have to reign myself in to meet more commercial markets, but there is nothing nicer than having a play about with new ideas and having no constraints.”
“Most of my brides come to me because they do want something different and I absolutely love it when they defy the ‘traditional tiara’ look and want something a bit edgier…”
What trends do you see coming through. and does this influence your work?
“Of late the birdcage style was very prominent and as this is a style I love anyway so of course I had to play about with this.”
“I made some lovely designs that were then adopted by clients as wedding guests as well as brides going from traditional white styles to huge birdcage veil fascinators in an array of colours.”
“The Vintage feel is still very, very popular and I do create several vintage inspired styles but rather than adopting the typical ’embellished fringe/motif’ on a band I went for handbeaded and encrusted fascinator panels worn in vintage waved hair…….as seen in my latest photoshoot.”
“Of course I am always concious of trends and pride myself of watching and quite often anticipating trends but I alway like to see what people are putting out there and offer something entirely different as this is where my niche is in the market.”
What is your favorite design and why?
“I still favour a design I created a few years ago as it is as current and popular now as it was then, and i still have a real love affair with swarovski crystals although the market seems to be leaning more towards seed beads and rhinestones now.”
“Its a gorgeous cluster of three handmade crystal flowers one of which is woven with a mixture of pearls and crystals and the flowers have a vintage button centre piece……this piece is fabulous worn in the 50’s style flat against the head or pulled up and out as a more 3D fascinator style…..its elegant but still a wee bit edgy and the mix of materials makes it a fabulous piece to match in with dresses and other accessories.”
What is your greatest achievement?
“My greatest personal achievement is of course my three children.”
“In terms of business, I studied three years to learn how to design jewellery and how to open my mind to design and in doing so won two competitions to work with fabulous well known contemporary jewellery designers in Berlin and in Munich and this was a fabulous experience and achievement.”
“However the greatest this year is winning the Wedding Industry Experts award for ‘Best Accessories in Glasgow'”
What do you see as the future of your business?
“I have been building up Twinkle Twinkle Tiaras for the last year to gain recognition as a brand name within the industry and in doing so have met some fabulous people and been to some fabulous events (BFSTU to name one…)”
“I am currently launching a new business within the industry and all is going well and things are falling into place nicely so this is something to look out for when the time comes.”
Thanks so much to Kirsteen for sharing her stunning work….so so pretty. I would also like to say a Thank you to Kirsteen for creating the bling for the Goody Bags at the Big Fat Scottish TweetUp…the wee bespoke BFSTU ncklaces were eyecatching and a real talking point.
