There are so many decisions with a Wedding, and unless you have that “US song”, the choice for first dance songs has to be another conundrum that couples have to contend with.
The first dance is always a special moment at any wedding, the vows have been exchanged and the rings are on, and then it is the time for the newly weds to take to the floor.
Apart from worrying whether or not they’ll trip over each other’s feet, the couple will also have had to make the tough decision of song choice.
Some couples go for conventional choices, whilst some go for the out and out alternative.
Some awesome advice from music entertainment agency Matchbox Music is to you is to choose a song that means something to both of you and not just something to please the crowd.
After all, it is your special day and if you want your first dance to be to a guilty pleasure, we’re sure your guests will indulge you.
For some inspiration, here are Matchbox Music’s top 5 First Dance songs that bride and grooms have requested our live bands perform.
John Legend – All Of Me
Fast becoming a modern day classic and a very popular first dance, All of Me ticks all the boxes when it comes to the perfect wedding dance.
Grammy winning songwriter John Legend wrote the song as a dedication to his wife, which is maybe why the heartfelt lyrics can’t help but move you.
The slow tempo also means you won’t have to worry about any tricky dance moves and can just enjoy the moment.
Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
Who say’s the old ones aren’t the best?
Lets Stay Together has been a first dance classic for many couples, with his smooth soul vocal and laid back R&B grooves, Al Green has been filling wedding dance floors for years.
With lyrics such as, “Let’s stay together, loving you whether, times are good or bad, happy or sad” you can see why this has remained a first dance favourite, it’s almost a wedding vow in itself!
Another benefit of this song is it won’t be lost on the older generation, so even the mother of the bride will have no excuse to not join in for a dance, once the bride and groom have had their chance to shine of course!
Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
Arguably one of the biggest artists of the past few years, you would have had to have been living under a rock to have not heard of Ed Sheeran.
The ginger behemoth has been taking the world by storm and his 2014 single Thinking Out Loud didn’t disappoint.
For newly weds looking for something more current, Thinking out Loud is a great choice.
Not only is it a beautifully crafted love song, but the accompanying music video is nothing short of inspiring, if your other half is up to the challenge, learning the dance routine is sure to leave your guests blown away!
Aerosmith – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing
Despite being the title soundtrack to the 1998 film Armageddon, in which the world is almost destroyed by a giant asteroid, I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing is actually a popular choice for wedding first dances.
Whether it’s the moving lyrics, Steven Tyler’s epic rock vocal, or a combination of the two, there is nothing like a good old rock ballad to show off the passion between the newly weds.
Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are
With so many hits under his belt, it would be fair to say you wouldn’t be short of options when picking a Bruno Mars song for a first wedding dance.
All though some people may go for the obvious Marry You option, we feel that Just The Way You Are is by far the classier and more understated choice.
Mars drew inspiration from Eric Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight and Joe Cocker’s You Are So Beautiful when penning the hit, and we think he’s done a pretty good job of capturing those sentiments.
We can’t imagine there are many brides who don’t want to be told “ You are amazing, just the way you are” and when the funky beat kicks in your guests will be dancing away with you.
Matchbox hope that their tips has been helpful, if you are a bride or groom and are still undecided about which first dance song you want your wedding band to play, grab your other half and give our top 5 tunes a listen (Crazy dance moves optional).
