Today I am thrilled to share a beautiful Portuguese Spring wedding with pretty blue and gold details at Quinta dos Machados.
Images were captured by Rita Santana Photography.
Born and raised in Palmela, Portugal, Rita is in love with life, with love stories, and with Star Wars.
She is never happier than when turning sparks into memories trying, every day, to look at the beautiful and to live by honourable values.
She’s been into photography since a child, hidden in her aunt’s shop, in between rolls of film behind the counter.
You’ll find Rita smiling behind the camera as if it were her being photographed.
I hand over to beautiful Bride Sabrina to tell us about their beautiful day…
How did you meet?
My husband and I met in college. We were friends first and then fell in love, and it went from there.
Tell us about the Proposal…
He proposed when we were traveling in Japan. We went on a hike and I complained through the whole thing!
At the end we were resting and he got down on one knee. I was totally surprised – and then I felt terrible for being a baby all the way through our hike.
Tell us about the Inspiration behind your Day…
Our wedding was a destination wedding in Portugal.
My entire family is from Portugal and I am a first generation American so I have very close ties to the country and culture, and I spent summers there growing up.
The wedding took place at a rural hotel/event space 45 minutes outside Lisbon.
We were really inspired by the classic Portuguese architecture, tiles, and colours you see in rural Portugal. A lot of white, blue and mustard.
We had wonderful Portuguese food, and even a fado singer.
Tell us about your Dress…
I originally thought I wanted a certain dress, but when I tried it on it was so heavy, and not what I expected.
The dress the Bridal picked for me wasn’t something I would have chosen but when I tried it on I was blown away.
It was a dainty, chic figure hugging dress with delicate lace detail with a sheer top.
I felt like a million bucks and I was able to dance all night long.
Tell us about the Decor…
We had a great wedding planner who really collaborated with me for our Portuguese Spring wedding.
We kept the decor simple with some gold and tile accents.
As for the reception we had classic white flower arrangements and gold and blue tiled plates with a lot of candles and mood lighting.
I wanted to incorporated the Portuguese architectural influence while still keeping it chic and sophisticated.
The flowers mostly consisted of white delicate flowers, just very simple and classic.
My wedding planner came up with an idea for a circular flower structure for the ceremony and a chandelier hanging from the trees above us.
It looked like dream oasis in the Forrest. It took my breathe away when I first saw it.
What were some of your favourite parts of your wedding?
One of my favourite parts was the live band we had.
They performed the ceremony songs as well as doing a set for the cocktail hour. It really created a vibe that was fun and relaxing.
Our DJ was also amazing, I was able to really tailor the music I wanted at our wedding and we danced all night long.
What was the most special moment of your wedding day?
Our wedding planner surprised us with a fado singer, and my entire Portuguese family sang along.
It was an emotional moment for me and our family to be there singing those beautiful words and being together on that special day.
Can you share any wedding planning or marriage advice that you’d like to share with other couples planning their day?
One – don’t sweat the small stuff. Things will go wrong, and it won’t be perfect. But that is OKAY! it will still be beautiful and fun.
Two – be in the moment. So much is happening on that day. Pictures, friends, family. It’s easy to get lost and not appreciate the moment.
Take a second with your partner, tell them you love them and think about how happy you are to get to marry them.
