Beautiful Bride Alissa says of the couples day…

How did you meet?

We met in college at an event for Grant’s fraternity.

Tell us about the engagement…

We were on a belated anniversary trip to Shenandoah Valley, and were staying in a cute little bed and breakfast.

The woman that ran the place had packed us up a picnic bag, complete with a bottle of wine, and we went of for a nice hike.

This hike ended up being the hardest hike I had ever been on. We hiked several miles down into the valley and passed tons of waterfalls and swimming holes.

We just kept going until we found one that wasn’t very crowded.

In fact, I’m not even sure it was actually on the trail as we basically slid down the muddy side of a hill to get there.

Several others saw us down there and tried to join us in the secluded (not crowded) spot, but couldn’t make it down the hill.

We had a nice picnic, even if we didn’t drink the wine. It was much too hard of a hike to be drinking anything but water.

After lunch, Grant got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Obviously, I said yes.

As soon as we needed to start the hike back up, he took the ring back. We had to scramble up the muddy hillside, and he didn’t want it to get dirty!

In sum, it was one of the best days of my life, even if we carried an entire bottle of wine down and up the hardest hike of my life.

How did Covid changed your wedding plans?

We were very fortunate planning our Secret Garden wedding. COVID didn’t change very much of our plans.

We had booked our venue package way back in 2019 when no one knew what was coming.

All of our vendors, thankfully, stayed the same and our date never changed. The main change was our guest count. We had originally planned on 150 people and only had about 75 in the end.

In April in Arizona, things were starting to “get back to normal” and our guests were a mix of immune, vaccinated, and not.

The biggest difficulty was that, due to COVID, none of our grandparents were able to join us for our special day.

Any wedding theme/colour palette?

I like very soft and neutral colours. My bridesmaids wore steel blue and our florals were heavy on greenery and eucalyptus.

The men wore charcoal grey suits with sage green ties. Very soft and springy.

April 3, 2021 ended up being the hottest April 3 in Phoenix in decades though with our outdoor ceremony getting up to temperatures of 98 F.

Everyone was very hot, but it was perfect once the sun was down.

What was your favourite bit of day?

Besides marrying the love of my life? I had a blast getting ready with all of my favourite women with my bridesmaids, mom, and mother-in-law all got ready at my parents’ house.

Hair and makeup came to us and the entire morning was a dance party with tasty food.

I also loved that the venue already had our food at the sweetheart table after our first dance.

It gave us a few quiet minutes to eat and be together before we made our rounds to thank everyone for coming.

Our coordinator even had a framed photo of us on the table taken immediately after the ceremony! Such a nice touch.

What advice would you give to couples getting married now?

Talk everything out and keep everything in perspective. There are so many decisions to make when wedding planning and it is easy to turn every molehill into a mountain.

Grant was great at keeping me grounded and keeping my perspective on what was really important.

We are only a few months into the marriage, but I imagine that this advice will hold long after wedding planning is over.
