A beautiful Winter Wedding at the Cambridge Debating Chamber with handmade touches

Today it is my great pleasure to share a lovely Winter Wedding at Cambridge Debating Chamber, from just before Christmas filled to the brim with sparkling lights, romance, stunning styling and tears in oodles.

Images of the day were captured by Gemma at Betti Confetti Photography.

Gemma  is a Wedding Photographer based in Brighton.

She loves to capture all the special and spontaneous memories of a wedding day, in a fresh and creative way, and give couples something a bit different.

Gemma says of the couple,

“I met the lovely Kate and James through one of Kate’s bridesmaids, Léonie.”

“I photographed Léonie’s wedding to Rob the year before, and before that her cousin’s wedding – so there’s a bit of a chain!”

“It’s fantastic for me as it’s a great acknowledgement of how happy people are with their photos, and when you’ve photographed friends’ or family’s weddings you know a couple are going to be your cup of tea – which Kate and James most definitely are!”

“And oh my goodness, their Winter Wedding was such a sparkling, happy day.”

“It felt really special being so close to Christmas and it was so emotional, I’ve never seen so many happy tears!”

“And Kate set the record for setting me off, which was before we’d even left the hotel in the morning – by reading a card to her mum which thanked for everything she’s done up until that point. It was beautiful.”

I now pass you over to the lovely Kate to share her story,

How did you meet?

“We met through mutual friends at the very unromantic Vodka Revolution in Cambridge.”

“We had met about a month previously however, but I was then attached and despite telling him approximately 30 times that I had a boyfriend James refused to let go of my hand for the entire night!”

“He had a cocktail umbrella behind his ear and we danced all night to 80’s classics until it came to getting a taxi home when he finally had to let go of my hand.”

“It seems like fate now as even on that night, when we arrived home for the usual post night out girly chat one of my bridesmaids said, “I think you should get with that blonde boy, he is who I always imagined you to be with”, even though at this point I still had a boyfriend!”

“After a month of James searching for me on Facebook, we finally met again at a friend’s hen do.”

“I was now unattached, accidentally kicked him at the table as I sat down (which James is still convinced that I did on purpose to get his attention) and the rest, as they say is history.”

When did you get engaged?

We got engaged on the 21st July 2012.”

Tell us about your wedding planning journey

“To be honest we found most of the process fairly stress free.”

“We seemed to stumble upon things and make decisions fairly easy, such as unexpectedly buying our wedding rings on a trip to visit my dad who lives in Dubai.”

“Probably the hardest part was finding the venue as we really wanted something with character but that was a little different.”

“After looking at a million different barns in places we had never been before I stumbled across the debating chamber on the internet.”

“After stepping foot in the building we knew it was where we were going to tie the knot and not only did it have all the character we were looking for and more, but it is in the city where we met and have lived together, so it was perfect!”

“It also appealed to us that at the time they had only done a handful of weddings, not somewhere that does 3 a day and you just become another bride and groom.”

“It is also fun to think that we used a room where many a celebrity and even presidents have graced such as Dame Judi Dench, the Dali lama, Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood and Sir Ian McKellen.”

“We did also add a lot of personal touches to the day which were fun to do together, although some were more fun than others!!”

“We made top trumps based on all of our guests which were on the tables which were good fun to make and even more fun to see people playing!”

“However we were ready to never see another cracker again after hand making 100 from scratch including the hats!!”

Our wedding planning was even more special to me as it inspired a new direction for my business that I have recently started, DaphneRosa.”

“I make fabric flowers and particularly wedding bouquets and buttonholes etc.”

“I handmade all of my bouquets, buttonholes, table flowers and arrangements which was really special, even more so as I was able to include some of my nan’s brooches and jewellery in my bouquet as she passed away last year.”

“I know that all of our wedding party love the fact they got to keep their flowers forever and we even had guests asking if they could take flowers from the tables on their way home as a souvenir!”

When did you get married?

“Our fabulous Winter Wedding was on Saturday 21st December 2013.”

What was the best bit of your day?

“There were so many!!”

“Obviously seeing each other as I walked down the aisle was incredibly special and a moment neither of us will forget for a very long time.”

“James did well to hold back to the tears but the emotions for everyone concerned were running high, even the registrar had tears in her eyes!”

“For me travelling to the ceremony with my dad aboard a pedalled rickshaw and passing the Salvation Army brass band playing Christmas carols was more perfect than I could have ever imagined on the last Saturday before Christmas!”

“After that the whole day was fab, from walking through the centre of Cambridge with all our guests to get to our reception venue and having our photo taken numerous times by tourists to watching the chefs hats and aprons be delivered to each table by our caterers where we had selected a carver for the meal, unknown to them!”

“Our cake, which was a gingerbread house, had been made by a friend which we saw for the first time on the day which generated more tears!!! We were blown away!”

“The party in the evening was also beyond our expectations with a brilliant band, dressing up box with inflatable instruments proving a big hit and seeing all of our family and friends having such a fantastic time.”

What advice would you give to other couples getting married?

“Don’t get stressed! I would say the biggest reason our planning was fairly stress free was that we didn’t have a fixed idea of what we wanted.”

“Try to go with the flow and it will all be ok in the end!”

“Also choose your bridal party well! We had fab people around us on the day which meant that we didn’t have to worry about a thing and everything went smoothly.”

Thank you so much to Gemma for sharing this stunning  Winter Wedding.

Love the little crackers, what an amazing handmade and creative touch and the Gingerbread House just says Christmas.

There is a  warm glow that radiates from the images both in the happiness of those present and the joy of the festive season.

Also its wonderful that her beautiful wedding has inspired Kate to pursue a new avenue in business too..from small acorns large oaks grow ( or flowers in this case!)

Thanks Alison! It’s so lovely seeing the photos laid out like this – I’ve looked through it about 4 times & I obviously know the pics! Kate is so talented, they put so much work into the creative, personal touches, so I can’t wait to see what she does with DaphneRosa 🙂 xx

[…] I wonder was it the kilt wearing rickshaw cyclist that caught her eye? Although it could just as easily have been the glitter, the fun, the tears, or the amazing gingerbread house and other handmade wedding details!
