Today I am thrilled to share this gorgeous characterful and colourful Civil Partnership in London at Morden Park House.
Images were captured by Paola De Paola Photography.
Paola De Paola is a creative, fun, but totally unobtrusive London wedding and same-sex photographer.
She has always been a passionate artist. After her degree in Fine Art, she worked as a professional photographer for music magazines and record companies.
She consequently moved to work for Getty Images as a high-end digital retoucher, more precisely for Contour Celebrities by Getty images.
During this time Paola was able to build a very deep understanding of the photographic industry.
Fifteen years experience with Getty UK has proved invaluable. As a natural progression Paola De Paola Weddings was born.
Paola says of the couple and their amazing Civil Partnership…
Sally and Tristan’s civil partnership was in a local venue, Morden Park House, a local venue.
This beautiful place is also very dear to me as in 2019 my husband Robert and I decided to renew our wedding vows there.
The London borough of Merton is wonderfully green and friendly, and after living here for quite a few years, and through the experience of Covid it has increased my appreciation of it and made this area a real home to me.
My ‘On My Doorstep Photographic Project’ played a major role in this and I love cycling around and chatting with people and getting to know the local residents.
So, when Sally asked me to photograph her and Tristans special day I was thrilled, with their civil partnership being a fabulous colourful celebration, full of little details.
While the guest list was small, this was made up for with a lot of big smiles and many joyful emotional moments.
I think they look like celebrities from a vintage glossy magazine, so stylish and quintessential, and the perfect representation of the most loving and caring couple.
I hand over to Sally…
How you met, your love story, how long have you been together?
We met as housing activists in Westminster, but our love story is our secret!
We’ve lived together for 44 years, in Westminster, Stoke Newington, and Wimbledon.
How important was your event for you and why did you decide to do it after so many years together?
We wanted to mark this point in our lives together, and were spurred on when civil partnerships finally become possible for heterosexual couples.
Our decision was also prompted when one of us became ill.
What was the best part of your day?
The enthusiasm, kindness, and practical help from everyone: from Paola, who encouraged us to make the most of our home setting; the jewellers who made our rings; the three sisters whose bakery was shut during the lockdown, but who made our Sicilian cakes as a special favour; the florist who delivered exactly what we’d hoped for; and the owner and staff of the restaurant who made our Covid-limited party of six so welcome…
But most of all our neighbours, who did everything to make our celebration modest but still special: stepping in to organise and decorate the garden; gathering everyone to see us off on the way to the registry office, and taking care of drinks in the garden the following day.
To top it all, the weather was suddenly wonderfully summery after cold days of grey clouds and rain.
How have COVID-19 restrictions affected you?
We initially wanted a low-key ceremony, so it suited us that numbers at the registry office were restricted – just us and our two witnesses, and Paola.
Although the ceremony and our celebrations were modest, we did want to create some lovely memories of the day, and Paola delivered that.
