Bride Steph says of the couples day…

How did you meet?

We met on Tinder, and we had our first date on 22nd August 2017.

Tell us about the Engagement…

The engagement happened on a trip to Australia.

He had intended to do it on a secluded beach we were on on a day trip but someone else came on to the beach!

So later that day we went through a drive through Krispy Kreme to buy doughnuts and on our way back to our house he pulled onto another beach.

It was dark by this point and he tricked me by saying he’d read there were these little animals that came out onto the beach at night time.

So I’m hunting little furry creatures with my phone torch and he said ‘what’s that’ and I picked up a tiny glass bottle that had a little note in it that said Will you marry me?

We looked at each other for what seemed like ages, as I was wondering if we had messed up someone else’s proposal and then he got down on one knee with a little light up box, and my response was ‘Of course I will you doughnut’!

Tell us about your Wedding Planning Journey…

The planning was tough as neither of us are good decision makers so when I saw Tree Top Escape and loved it we just didn’t look anywhere else.

We picked it for it’s intimacy (max 14 guests) and simplicity (they give a list of suppliers to pick from and liaise with who know the venue well).

At the time we had 3 grandparents we wanted to feel comfortable and involved, as well as not wanting the additional stress a big wedding can come with.

I also didn’t want the whole walking down the aisle with hundreds watching!

As I have a very close family and James unfortunately doesn’t have many of his family around, the intimate Devon elopement presented at Tree Tops just caught our eye and seemed like it was a perfect solution!

We picked a Spring date of 25th April and started to get excited from there!

Photographer Laura at Freeform Images was a great choice – we loved how her pictures included the beauty of the venue so well and the landscapes.

We chose Gary Shapland at Cooking with Gazz for the food – another choice we’ll made as I’ve never eaten food like it! Just delicious!

There was also his wife Marcia Shapland who is a florist / stylist who created our venue wedding decoration.

She also made my flower crown and corsages for all the girls and button holes for all the boys.. She’s superwoman.

Finally for an added touch Sam at Tennacott Dairy came along with her lovely little ice cream truck and handmade ice cream. It was a lovely little extra treat and she was so lovely just like her ice cream!

Tell us how Covid has impacted your plans…

So when Lockdown came and the news hit home that we wouldn’t be able to get married on our chosen date, we were of course upset.

We both tried to remain positive and accepted the offer to change dates, as at the time everybody thought it would all be over by June! So we selected 22nd August.

At the time to my Grandad was poorly and we really wanted to get the wedding in the diary to ensure he’d be there.

Neither of us realised it initially, but that was actually the 3rd anniversary of our first date!

Luckily Marcia, Gary and Sam were all able to move us to the new date. But Laura was already booked for another wedding!

We decided not to rush into booking another photographer for fear that the wedding could still be postponed again.

Luckily when I got in touch nearer the time, Laura’s other customer had also postponed and so she was free for us again. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Unfortunately James lost his Nan in October last year, and then very sadly I lost my Grandad in June so there were two very special people to us that weren’t able to be there with us physically.

Lockdown was a very bittersweet time for us. We remained positive to begin with finding new dog walks and enjoying time together.

Then when it eased a little  enjoying time in the garden at a distance with my grandparents.

We had had a lot of things planned…

My hen do in March

Our honeymoon in April

My nans 80th in May

My mum and dads 40th wedding anniversary in May

A family holiday (that we’ve been on every year since I was born) in June

My sisters wedding in June

And when we lost my Grandad everything changed… The positivity we’d fought hard to keep had gone.

So neither of us had the excitement we had wanted when the wedding was coming up. We were still uncertain about whether it would happen, whether guests would be limited, whether a local lockdown would prohibit us.

There was so much uncertainty. But we kept planning as if it would go ahead.

Really the only thing we ended up having to change was the layout of the ceremony and the guests wearing their custom masks (made with pictures of their own faces).

Otherwise, because we were all already a social bubble, everything else was permitted to stay as planned.

And although the lead up to our intimate Devon elopement was not what we had hoped… the day itself was perfect. We loved every single minute.

Thank you so much to Laura for sharing this stunning intimate Devon elopement.

Sunflowers are pure floral sunshine, and love the glorious pops of yellow throughout the styling of this incredible day.
