Bride Hayley says of the couples Polish destination wedding day…

How did you meet?

We met when we were 16 at a mutual friend’s birthday party – on a bright pink party bus that drove us all around London!

Tell us about the Proposal…

It was 2 years ago on the day of our 6 year anniversary! Charlie told me to pack an overnight bag as he was taking me away for our Anniversary.

We arrived at a beautiful hotel in Canary Wharf and on our way to dinner, Charlie took me on a detour through these gorgeous gardens where he spun round and dropped to one knee.

It was such an emotional moment for both of us that neither of us remember exactly what we said- but we guess he must have asked me to marry him and I must have said yes!

Tell us about your wedding planning journey…

We knew we wanted a small wedding ceremony abroad with just our immediate families.

We weren’t quite sure how our friends and wider families would take it but they were all so supportive and happy for us.

We knew we’d throw a big party when we got home so I think that made everyone feel better- knowing they would still get to celebrate with us!

Initially, we looked at marrying on the Amalfi Coast but quickly realised our budget would never stretch that far!

Charlie has Polish roots so we started to look at Poland. We had heard how gorgeous Gdansk was so decided to look into marrying there.

We found some beautiful venues but we were finding it quite difficult to get a feel for places without physically seeing them and the language barrier was difficult too!

That’s when we decided to get a Wedding Planner and I am SO glad we did!

Anna took the stress away and was so passionate about her job – we instantly knew we were in safe hands!

We had to go to Gdansk a few months before the wedding to sort out the legal side of the marriage.

It involved a lot of paper work and organisation which I think this is sometimes overlooked when people initially think of having a destination wedding!

Any special touches?

As the planning unfolded, we came up with the idea of having our wedding cake on the beach!

I left the details in the hands of Anna who did an incredible job!

We also had some gorgeous little cake forks personalised with our guests’ names which everyone thought was a lovely touch!

Anna also surprised us with a singer when we arrived at a  BBQ on the terrace in the evening.

He serenaded us with Ed Sheeran and we danced with sparklers! It was magical!

What was the theme /colour palette of your Big Day?

Shades of pink with gold touches throughout. It was a very romantic theme with a touch of luxury!

What was the best bit of your day?

That is a tough question-

Hayley – My favourite moment was walking barefoot on the beach, hand in hand with my husband, towards the dreamy cake set-up which completely blew us away!

Charlie – The best bit for me was the actual ceremony. Being announced as husband and wife was the best feeling in the world!

Is there anything you would do differently?

I think we would have enlisted the help of a Wedding Planner sooner as it was REALLY stressful when we were trying to plan a wedding abroad on our own.

Anna made us aware of some legalities that we didn’t know about which could have meant our Polish destination wedding wouldn’t go ahead!

Wedding Planners can be pricey but they are 100 percent worth the money and it meant that Charlie and I could enjoy the planning process!

Anna also came up with ideas that we never would have thought of on our own!

What advice would you give to other couples getting married?

For destination weddings –

1. Consider ‘alternative’ destinations. When people think of destination weddings they often think of hot, tropical destinations with white-sand beaches.

We are proof that you can have a wedding just as beautiful in a less obvious place!

We are yet to meet another British couple to marry in Gdansk and we even received a letter from the Mayor thanking us for choosing to marry in her city! That was pretty cool.

2. Consider a Wedding Planner if there is a language barrier and you can’t travel back and forth to physically be there. You won’t regret it!
