Karen Massey is a wedding photographer working in Warwickshire and throughout the UK. Photography is more than just a job to her; it’s a passion.

Her skill involves communicating the mood of a scene through her lens.

She does this by listening to people’s stories, understanding their history and learning more about them.

She prides herself on getting to know them first, because photography with heart is all about emotion.

Karen shares how she and the couple met,

“Tanya & Alec had chosen not to have a wedding photographer.”

“The reason for this? They thought they were incredibly camera shy!”

“Unbeknown to them I knew every tiny detail of their wedding that they had been planning for the past 18 months.”

“Their closest friends had decided they would soon regret this and as a special wedding gift, they had asked me to turn up on the day as a surprise and photograph their beautiful best friends wedding.”

“Let me tell you now, as soon as I got there, we soon discovered they weren’t that shy at all…”

“Tanya and Alec had chosen to get married in the stunning Barnsley House nestled away in the Cotswolds.”

“It had everything they had dreamed of; enchanting gardens, elegant interiors, delicious food and wine.”

“With just 18 rooms they had exclusive use of the hotel which was perfect for the intimate wedding they wanted, it was like having their our own private country house for the day.”

I hand over to the gorgeous Tanya to share her and Alec’s beautiful day,

Tell us about your Wedding Planning Journey

“Alec and I have been inseparable since day one, our eleven years together have been full of fun and romance!”

“We wanted our wedding day to reflect us, the feel of the day was so important we wanted it to be relaxed and fun – an intimate gathering yet a huge celebration with all of our favourite people!”

“We were engaged 18 months before our wedding day, although we booked our venue within the first couple of months of being engaged the real planning of all those ‘little’ details didn’t start until about six months before the big day.”

“On the day my Pops walked me down the aisle.”

“For my walk down the aisle we chose All I want you is – Barry Louis Polisar, because it’s just us!”

“The lyrics have always made us smile; “If you were a wink, I’d be a nod, If you were a seed well I’d be a pod.”

“Our dear friend David read an extract from the velveteen Rabbit which was one of my favourite childhood books and Alec’s sister Jo gave a beautiful personal reading at that point there wasn’t a dry eye in the garden!”

What was the inspiration behind your Wedding Style?

Barnsley House was a huge inspiration for us when it came to styling our day, the beautiful gardens and gothic summerhouse made a perfect setting for a romantic and intimate outdoor ceremony. ”

“When choosing my dress I was definitely inspired by the grace and elegance of the 1920’s and 30’s.”

“I absolutely loved planning our wedding, I enjoyed every aspect of putting together the day and was never far from my wedding file!”

“The day felt so personal to us both as it involved everything we loved and with the help of our nearest and dearest we created all of the little details together and styled everything ourselves.”

The Styling

“When it came to styling the wedding I choose against have a particular theme, instead we opted for a combination of all our favourite things; candles, soft peonies, fairy lights, lanterns, Jo Malone scent and rabbits!!!”

“Alec and I are extremely lucky to have such talented friends David and Jerry owners of Hatton & Harding.”

“They played a huge part in helping us style the day and sourced many beautiful items for us that we now have all around our home!”

“We took inspiration from Barnsley House when choosing décor as every room oozed timeless elegance, which we wanted to compliment in our styling.”

“For the reception room we kept things simple, we used clear glass vases of differing sizes on each table and filled them with huge white peonies.”

“We hung glass bottles filled with delicate gypsophila around the room and added hundreds of flickering candles on the tables and fireplaces. The room felt so pretty and intimate.”

“The ceremony setting was beautiful; a little stone summer house nestled in the gardens.”

“We used delicate lanterns in subtle grey tones on the steps and glass vases filled with hydrangeas and peonies and of course plenty of flickering candles!”

“We used chiffon ribbon to tie white hydrangea heads and rosemary to the ceremony chairs. It was perfectly romantic!”

“It really is true a scent can remind you of a moment forever, the two Jo Malone fragrances I used on our day will always be our wedding smell!”

“I layered the fragrances of Lime Basil and Mandarin and English Pear and Freesia they complemented each other beautifully.”

“We also used candles of both scents around the house and on the steps of the summer house during our ceremony – a touch of luxury.”

The Venue

“We first visited Barnsley House on a cold and wet day in January.”

“We walked through the gardens in our wellies exploring all its nooks and crannies, the more I saw the more I loved!!”

“I can remember standing in the gardens looking back at the house feeling full of excitement we must have been beaming, and after a yummy Sunday lunch and bottle of wine in the hotels restaurant we were BOTH sold!!!”

Barnsley House really does have it all enchanting gardens, elegant interiors, delicious food and wine and the most fabulous team!”

“With just 18 rooms we were able to have exclusive use of the hotel which was perfect for the intimate wedding we wanted, it was like having our own private country house for the day, all our guests looked so at home, no one wanted to leave!”

Bride and Groom Style

“THE dress, where do I start?”

“After seeing a sneak preview of Jenny Packham’s 2013 collection on the internet I was instantly drawn to Silverbell, I just had to wait a further six months before the collection was available!!! It was certainly worth the wait, when I first laid my eyes on Silverbell I knew it was the dress for me.”

“It was so feminine and romantic and wonderfully reminiscent of a bygone era, I adored its soft silver grey tones and the delicate silk chiffon.”

“It was cut beautifully and had a relaxed elegance which complemented the intimate wedding we were planning. I had found my dress!”

“To accessorise  I wore Rachel Simpson – ‘Ginger’ T bar shoe in antique silver, the perfect shoe for dancing and Jenny Packham – Valentine headdress II, purchased from the Jenny Packham Boudouir.”

“I fell in love with this headdress as soon as I tried it on, it felt so ethereal and elegant, the delicate scrolls of pearls and crystals complimented Silverbell beautifully.”

“When it came to hair and make up I really wanted to look and feel like me, on a good day of course!”

“I was so lucky to have my friend and hairdresser Ollie style my hair, he created the perfect ‘whispy’ curl for me.”

“I felt more comfortable doing my own make up and I was surprised just how calming it was, I don’t think I have ever had a steadier hand for my eye liner!”

“I had a coupe of make up lessons at Bobbi brown on the lead up, which I really enjoyed and I now have an extremely well stocked make up bag!”

“Not to be out done, Alec was also sharp suited.”

“With a little inspiration from Tom Ford and nearly as much research as me, Alec decided on a dinner suit from Gieves & Hawkes. He enjoyed the full experience at No.1 Savile Row like I have never seen.”

“My two beautiful nieces were our flower girls, we choose their dresses because they were so incredibly girly –  full skirts and oversized bows!! Purchased from John Lewis.

The Flowers

“Flowers were always going to be a huge part of our wedding, Alec and I had decided our wedding would be in  peony season – my very favourite flower.”

“With an abundance of colour in the gardens of Barnsley House I decided to keep our flowers simple and elegant, using a combination of white peonies, white hydrangea heads and pretty gypsophila.”

“With the help of my green fingered friend David we set about creating the wedding flowers!”

“A couple of months before the big day we signed up to a wedding flower arranging school, this was a lovely experience to share and we learnt lots of new techniques that would help us on the day.”

“I ordered hundreds and hundreds of the most beautiful fragrant peonies and possibly the largest hydrangea heads I have seen, it was like a sea of white flowers!”

“If you are thinking about doing your own flowers I can’t recommend this enough! I absolutely loved creating my bouquet on the morning of the wedding a simple hand tie of the softest white peonies.”

The stationery

“We are so lucky to have an extremely talented illustrator in the family, I have always adored Kate’s work and as we are like two peas in a pod it was amazing to have her create totally bespoke stationary for us.”

“Kate’s wonderfully whimsical design for our invitations included dancing toads, love heart mice and rabbits playing the ukulele all celebrating in the grounds of Barnsley House.”

“Kate also created many other beautiful things for our day including, individual menu’s, a very pretty table plan, table names (we used our beloved rabbits names) badges, sparklers, cake boxes, confetti bags and the a personal copy of the velveteen rabbit book for each of our guests.”

The Cake

“We decided on a table of cakes all created by our nearest and dearest.”

“These included yummy sponges with ruffled butter cream on the outside created by Alec’s sister and her very talented partner Luke, they looked so pretty and tasted delicious.”

“My friends Nan sent us her famous carrot cake and the groom also added his creation to the cake table; an incredible Victoria sponge with six layers, my favourite!”

“We displayed them all on different glass cake stands that I had collected.”

“The next day all our guests left with a hearty selection of homemade delights, a little something for them to enjoy on their journey home!”

“This was a difficult one for us, we knew what we definitely didn’t want (Disco Dave with flashing lights) but we couldn’t find what we did want, we searched and searched the internet but had no luck, then finally we came across the Wedding Smashers.”

“We went along to ‘Craft central gets hitched’ in London where DJ Max was playing, we booked the Wedding Smashers the next day!”

“I can not recommend them enough Max was amazing, the dance was floor was packed from start to finish and the atmosphere was brilliant – so much fun!”

Capturing the day

“Alec and I made the decision early on not to have a photographer…we are both incredibly camera shy.”

“Our closest friends thought we were bonkers though, and unknown to us they organised a photographer, Karen Massey,  as our wedding gift from them.”

“We can’t thank them enough, Karen was absolutely amazing on the day she instantly put us at ease and her pictures tell our story beautifully.”

“Our very favourite shot is the one of Alec and I in a field (Alec laughing his socks off) it completely captures ‘us. We will cherish them forever!”

“We were also  so lucky to have met the extremely talented filmmaker Hugh Farrow, having Hugh capture our wedding was the best decision we could have made!”

“Alec and I were overwhelmed the first time we watched our film, to see the moments Hugh had managed to capture especially during the ceremony.”

“Watching the little film really is like reliving our day, which is the best feeling ever, I think Pricilla Ahn – dream (song used) will pull at my heart strings forever!”

What was your favourite part of your Day ?

“Walking down the aisle and seeing Alec for the first time was definitely the most magical moment for me, he looked so incredibly handsome and so loving.”

“As we said our vows it really was as if it was just the two of us, I don’t think I took my eyes of him for the whole ceremony!”

“Being surrounded by everyone we love together in the one place was completely over whelming, I felt a rush of happiness.”

“Another  favourite moment for us both was when our dear friend jerry announced us to our guests as the new ‘Mr and Mrs Sutton.’”

“The cheer or rather ROAR from all our friends and family was fantastic, it was an incredible feeling that we will never forget!”

What would be your advice to other Brides?

“When it comes to planning your wedding you can easily become overwhelmed and loose track of what is important to you both.”

“There is so much great inspiration out there but remember you don’t need everything in order to have a lovely day make your wedding a reflection of you both and don’t do anything because you think you have too, it’s your day!”

“Definitely involve your friends and family wherever you can as it really does make everything more special and personal.”
