Today I am thrilled to share this beautiful whimsical and laid back sunrise elopement in the Colorado Rockies.
Elopements are love in its simplest form, and are still incredibly beautiful and significant but without show.
Sometimes we need to step back and see whats important to real people, real couples, and that one overwhelming thing like for Aspen and Hans is always love.
Images were captured by Sheena Shahangian Photography.

She captures imagery that’s true to your distinct story in nature’s most epic places.
She says of the couple and their gorgeous Colorado Elopement…
Aspen and Hans are true adventure and outdoors lovers at heart.
Being in remote locations, whether in the mountains or desert, is something they love to do, so it only made sense to them to have an elopement day that reflected that.
They chose to elope because they knew that the idea of a big wedding didn’t resonate with them.
With everything going on in the world right now, it’s a realization that many engaged couples have realized too, and Aspen and Hans saw this as a chance to have a wedding that felt true to who they are as a couple.
They liked the idea of saying their vows by an alpine lake…or perhaps wandering through the forest together to soak up nature and celebrate this moment in a more private, intimate way.
They also loved the inherently rustic vibe that nature has to offer and wanted to embrace that on their elopement day.
We ultimately decided on one of my favourite lakes in Colorado — a spot that sits at over 11,000 ft elevation.
The lake features a gorgeous nearby woodsy area, along with some of the best mountain views in the area.
Since they eloped in mid-July, the wildflowers were also in full bloom, which added to the whimsical feel of the day.
That’s one of the things I think is so epic about adventure elopements: the backdrop in and of itself is just about the coolest decor you could ask for.
Hans and Aspen’s laid-back attire was the perfect complement to their adventurous day in the mountains.
Hans opted for a casual, un-tucked white shirt paired with some khakis, and Aspen went with a whimsically flowy off-the-shoulder dress with floral details.
She paired it all with a flower crown to feel like the ultimate mountain princess.
To try to ensure they had the most privacy possible on their elopement day, we chose a date in the middle of the week at sunrise.
We started on the trail in the dark, with headlamps in tow.
When we arrived at their ceremony coordinates, they took some time to soak in the darkness before the sun came up.
As the light began to wake up the lake, we noticed steam rising up from the water, adding to the ethereal feel of the day.
They began their elopement ceremony at sunrise, with Aspen’s dad officiating.
The two of them shared an emotional set of vows as the sun began to light up the tips of the mountains.
After their ceremony, we spent the rest of the morning hiking on the trail and through the woods.
Aspen and Hans even decided to cool off by walking into the lake in their wedding attire (I mean it when I say these two were truly up for anything).
If there’s one thing I love about elopements, it’s their ability to allow couples to craft their own customized day and follow their own rules, and that’s exactly what Aspen and Hans did.
They embraced every adventure the day brought them, from the dirt collecting on Aspen’s dress train to the chilly sunrise temps at elevation.
If you ask me, that’s what weddings are truly about: celebrating this new adventure through life as a couple.
I feel like it’s easy nowadays to get lost in all the moving parts on a wedding day, but as an elopement photographer, I’ve had the honour of witnessing so many couples re-defining what their wedding looks like by crafting a day that’s truly personalized to them and speaks to their heart.
