Today I am delighted to spotlight on the Medieval Wedding Poet who writes unique personalized medieval wedding poetry that transforms a story into a gently comical medieval ballad, featuring the bride and groom as lady and knight.
I hand you over to Anna Whitehouse….
Who are you, and what do you do?
“My name is Anna, otherwise known as The Medieval Wedding Poet, and I write medieval style bespoke wedding poems for castle weddings and medieval weddings.”
“My poems tend to be commissioned by brides, bridegrooms, best men or a couple’s family and friends, then used as a light-hearted alternative reading or speech at their wedding ceremony or reception.”
“My poems transform each couple into medieval characters (e.g. lady and knight), to tell their tale.”
“Every word is based upon information shared with me by the couple or those close to them. I get to read a lot of very romantic stories!”
When and why did you start your Company?
“I started my company after a friend and I collaborated to write a comical medieval poem for a friend’s wedding.”
“I was totally amazed by the positive feedback the poem received and my husband persuaded me to set up a website and offer my services to other couples!”
“At the time I was looking for a new creative outlet, as I had a young baby and I wasn’t able to do much work outside the home, due to a having condition called Chronic Fatigue.”
What inspires you?
“I love history and I am fascinated by the medieval period, but I have always been inspired by words and particularly by poetry.”
“Having studied drama at university, which involved plenty of acting, I feel at home writing poems for performance.”
“Of course, I am also very inspired by the romantic stories couples share with me and when I am writing a new poem, I become totally immersed in the story and the atmosphere of the poem.”
Do trends influence your work?
“I don’t generally worry about wedding trends, as my poems are very different in that way.”
“There are many wedding poets around, some of whom I greatly admire, but oddly I seem to be the only person writing medieval wedding poems!”
“I do spend a lot of time interacting on social media with wedding castles, American medieval faires and alternative wedding planners.”
What is your greatest achievement?
“Last year I was asked to write a special poem for a National Trust medieval feast, which was very different to writing a love poem!”
“This year I have featured on several blogs and I have also been interviewed by The Sunday Mercury for a double page spread. That was great fun!”
“I have also recently written for a couple who are having an amazing wedding at a castle, then a huge reception featuring The Wurzels as entertainment!”
“The couple asked me to write a poem which will be a central part of their ceremony, which always makes me feel very humble.”
What do you see as the future of your Company?
“I am often told by couples that they have discovered me after a long time of searching, so I would love to become better known as a wedding writer.”
“I would also like to create more links with American renaissance faires, as they hold many vow renewal ceremonies and wedding ceremonies.”
“My dream would be to team up with a calligrapher to develop a luxurious version of my poems, which I would then offer as a gift.”
Thank you so much to Anna for sharing her medieval wedding poetry.
Its certainly a very unique angle and very fitting for castle and medieval themed big days where the Bride and Groom want to transport themselves to a romantic age taking on the persona of the lady and the knight.
From alternative readings to speeches, to order of service sheets it is a unique gift that has untold use.
