I had a chat to Frances Farmer, the lady behind the brand…

Who are you and what do you do?

“I am Frances, and I design and make bridal, evening and occasion wear in my studio in the New Forest.”

When and why did you start your company?

“Having qualified in 1984 I worked in various jobs in the fashion industry including starting my own business.”

“Life changed and I then got married and had two babies so put my fashion career on hold.”

“Eager to get back I revived Chaos in 2003 and rebranded calling it Calm Amongst The Chaos.”

“I was only designing and making wraps and shrugs at the time, but when asked to be in a bridal catwalk show ended up making four wedding gowns so I could show off the wraps.”

“This was the start if what we have now as business has continued to grow.”

“I now employ 4 girls and we run a busy made to measure outfit not only making bridal but also evening and occasion wear.”

“One of our main lines is mother of the bride as this seems an area that is hard to find the right thing on the high street.”

“Alongside our  annual collections Chaos designs and makes bespoke dresses for the individual.”

“We specialise in designs of times gone by; with a fondness of glamourous Hollywood and classic styles.”

What inspires you?

“Inspiration comes from all around!

As team we create mood boards and collect cuttings helping to create our designs and ideas.”

“Some of the great designers can be a great starting point for an idea.”

“We also love retro styles and look at the past for glamour and classic designs.”

“Our customers also can prove to be great inspiration as many have their own unique style and elegance that we can gleam ideas from.”

Do trends influence your work?

“Absolutely!”

“One of my main grumbles is that bridal gowns especially seem to be stuck in the past when it comes to current trends and brides fall into the first dress they try on without considering their options and getting something that really suits them.”

“The bohemian feel at the moment is one of my personal favourites and quite a few of our current collection reflects this.”

The Process

“The bespoke dressmaking service involves designing a gown especially for you and is a perfect way to end up with the exact look that you want for your wedding or special occasion – and you will be involved at each stage of the process.”

“Whether you are interested in trying on some samples from the collections or in talking about a bespoke gown, the first step should be a phone call and then a visit to the studio/shop in the centre of Ringwood, Hampshire.”

What is your greatest achievement?

“Making my business successful not only for customers but also for myself and everyone involved.”

“Times have been quite tough and I feel quite proud of Chaos!”

What do you see as the future of your company?

“I hope for it to continue to grow and provide the good service we give our customers.”
