I hand you over to the lovely Isabelle to tell you all about her fabulous company,

Who are you, and what do you do?

“My name is Isabelle Bambridge and I own and run The Designer Cake Company in the North East of England, along with my boyfriend Richard.”

When and why did you start your Company?

“Originally from Norwich in Norfolk, I began my career as a professional dancer with The Royal Ballet but a change in direction aged 18 brought me to the North East to study for a degree in Fashion Marketing at Northumbria University.”

“Following university, I gained employment with a fashion-based PR agency in London looking after the likes of Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Julien MacDonald before permanently relocating to the North East where I have held a number of marketing roles over the past ten years.”

“I’ve experienced quite a lot considering I’m only 36 and I’ve learnt a lot along the way.”

“I’ve always had a creative streak so have constantly looked for ways to be artistic but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I discovered I had a talent for designing and making cakes.”

“My boyfriend has two children and when we met, I helped him make birthday cakes for the boys and realised I was actually pretty good at it.”

“From there, I made cakes for friends and family and the response was incredible.”

“The demand grew and in 2011, I officially launched The Designer Cake Company but still continued to work full time until last year when I gave up my day job.”

What inspires you?

“When I’m working on a new design, I look at everything around me for ideas, be it flowers, fashion, stationery, wallpaper, furnishings… anything that’s different and creative.”

“I like to take traditional ideas and give them a modern twist and most importantly, I aim for a flawless finish.”

“You can take a very plain and simple design and make it sensational with a perfect finish which I believe is what sets me apart from others.”

“I am an absolute perfectionist and I won’t let a cake go out the door unless it’s perfect in every way.”

“My attention to detail and the finish of my cakes are the key things that attract the majority of our customers. I get asked all the time if my cakes are actually real!”

Do trends influence your work?

“To a certain extent, yes. They have to otherwise we wouldn’t be catering for what our couples want.”

“However, we try to work within trends to come up with something fresh and different instead of simply following what others do.”

“Our couples will often give me a broad overview of what they like along with colours etc. and then they let me do the rest.”

“In fact, a lot of them won’t know the exact design of their cake until they see it on the day which is a huge compliment because it means they trust me completely to make something beautiful.”

What is your greatest achievement?

“Last year we won the Best New Exhibitor award at The UK Wedding Show and we were also shortlisted for a Hitched Best Cake Designer award.”

“Last month, one of our designs was featured in Wedding Magazine which was a dream come true and we have been in numerous other publications both in the UK and around the world.”

What do you see as the future of your Company?

“Since I gave up my day job nine months ago, things have really taken off and the business is going from strength to strength which is fantastic.”

“We are being presented with new and exciting opportunities on a daily basis so who knows what the future holds!”

“I love working with couples to make their big day extra special so I hope to continue doing that for a long time to come.”

“Every couple, wedding and cake design is individual and my aim is to always treat them as such.”

“We spend time getting to know our customers and a lot of them therefore become and remain friends which I think is really important. At the end of the day, a wedding is a hugely personal event and I strongly believe that in order to contribute successfully to that, we need to fully understand what the bride and groom want.”

“I know how particular I would be if I was getting married so the whole ethos of the business is based on how I would want to be treated and the service that I would expect from my suppliers.”

“It’s really important to only do business with people that you like, trust and believe to be good at what they do… if we can continue to achieve that with all our customers then we’ve done our job!”
