Today I am thrilled to share the work of Fleur de Lace, a Wedding Prop Hire and Styling company in Herts/Beds who love making things pretty for your Big Day.
Fleur de Lace specialise in decorating, inspiring, designing and advising you on your special occasion, and have vast experience in creating all visual aspects of your event, sourcing props and helping turn your dreams into reality whatever your budget.
I hand you over to Alice Verlaecke – Williams…
Who are you and what do you do?
Fleur de Lace is a Styling, Prop hire and Décor company, based in London’s Home counties.
I’m Alice, the one up the ladder hanging lanterns, traipsing the vintage markets for awesome finds, arranging seasonal buds and blooms, at the sewing machine creating classic printed cotton bunting, hand painting directional signs and making 100 blue toned pinwheels. I think you get the gist!
Why and when did you start your business?
My career started as a weekly volunteer at a Propshop called STV in West London (Now somewhere under Westfield Shopping Centre!)
From there came working as a runner in any company that would lead me to finally finding an Art Department job.
Working my way through the ranks in the art department, I worked on numerous TV shows, in comedy, reality and entertainment.
There are many stories to tell, helping Lenny Henry get his trousers on because I happened to be there, being chased down Oxford Street by an irate bunch of McFly fans to Style Guru Gok Wan telling me I pulled off ‘Lesbian Chic!’
During this time between shows, I worked on events, photo-shoots and the odd wedding (also as a Saturday girl in a Christmas shop).
Making things look just right was part and parcel of the job and being taught skills by greatly experienced fellow creative’s all led to where I am now.
Something had to give when baby Ivy was due to arrive in Summer 2012, enter Fleur de Lace.
With training in Floristry, a house full of things from shows and shoots, a creative flair that needed to be challenged more than painting a nursery, Fleur de Lace was in full swing either side of another Verlaecke -William’s arrival (Dottie) in Summer 2014.
What inspires you?
I’m online 24/7 browsing my favourite blogs and pinning the nights away.
I buy wedding magazines which feels just like it did preparing for my own wedding, that I have re-planned so many times in my head.
People say they wouldn’t change a thing- I would! And each month my ideas change again!
Before I used to log each page that I had turned the corner of, now I have a folder on my computer with quick phone snaps of anything I see and like.
Do trends influence your work?
I love to see the fashion world changing and the catwalk trends, seeing that peter down into the wedding world.
I can’t match the thrill of the catwalk from my little office (life’s a lot less glamorous being a mum to Ivy and Dot!) but with Pinterest nothing goes unmissed.
I have been asked before how the fashion world influences me; I browse past the dress silhouettes, it’s all about the textures, colours and mainly the styles that catch my attention.
Some couples know exactly what they want when they contact me. Some want guidance on the possibilities within their wedding décor.
What is your greatest achievement?
Goodness, always a hard one to answer. Each day is so different in Fleur de Lace.
It’s an achievement if I sit down at the end of the day and know I’ve given my clients 100%, kept on top of my to-do lists and found a balance of family and work life.
The best feeling is receiving emails or notes after I’ve done a big wedding.
I discuss with clients exactly what they want, exchange images, ideas etc. But after I set up I always question myself and think “is this what they wanted?”
So the notes of thanks and praise (from the couple and even their family and friends) are like a big pat on the back and I’m reassured that I’ve helped make people’s days personal and memorable as they wanted.
What are your plans for the future?
Is it too cheesy if I say; to make more weddings, look amazing?
I’m not really a chair cover/wishing well kind of girl. I love to think of unique ideas, style weddings that are a little out of the ordinary and create looks that are standout and memorable.
I want to continue to bring forward fresh ideas to any industry that’s ever changing.
Now isn’t that just marvellous, and aren’t those colourful bubble letters amazing.
Thanks to Alice for sharing her extraordinary creativity, and showing how her venue styling and wedding prop hire can take your wildest dreams and make them real.
