Modiste – Curiously Unusual Hats

Today I am thrilled to spotlight on Modiste, and their curiously unusual hats.
Modiste is a fantastic Millinery company growing fast, and gaining a great name for themselves in the Scottish market.
Modiste is about the finishing touches, the extra bit of ‘grab you’ glamour.  Shamelessly decorative and delicate, whether it’s in bridal lace and crystals or luxe mixes of upcycled heritage fabrics, Modiste designs and creates accessories for every occasion mixing both vintage and contemporary elements.
I recently met Natasha at a Wedding show and saw first hand her beautiful work, so I am delighted to be able to share that with you today.
Who are you, and what do you do ?
“I’m Natasha  Hutchison – I am the designer and maker behind ‘Modiste‘,  an accessories brand based in the old weaving village of Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire, Scotland. I am also a self confessed fabric and trim junkie, addicted to statement accessories.”
Why, and when did you start your Business ?
“Following a long career in fashion and homewares buying for store groups in UK and Ireland travelling around the world developing product, I decided to go back to my designer roots in 2010, and having always been addicted to accessories, it seemed like the obvious choice of product.”
“I studied Textile Design & Surface Decoration at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen so you can see where the love of texture and fabric came from!”
“I create bespoke pieces for fashion or occasion and also sell some pieces online at
My focus of late has been on the bridal market and I am delighted to have Ivory Whites in Perth as a Modiste stockist.”
What inspires you ?
“My inspiration comes from many places, it may be vintage couture details, mixing old and new elements and playing around with fabric and trims. I love the drama of millinery, so all things theatrical, the effortless style of various female style icons throughout the decades is really important.”
“Of course, Phillip Treacy is my millinery idol, but I also admire Edwina Ibbotson and Jane Taylor. I also completed a block making course with a milliner from London called Jane Smith who makes hats for all the movies and theatrical/TV productions and is one inspirational lady!”
“I also love the detail and silhouette of footwear and often use that to design surfaces or shapes.”
Do trends have an impact on your work ?
“Yes, to a point.  With trends in Hollywood inspired details such a glamourous backs, slits, assymetric shapes, trains, sparkle and mermaid silhouettes there is currently a move to increase the beaded and jewelled element in my design and mix the two to make something unique and full of texture and intricate detail.
“But also the trend for  ruffles, sash details, colour, mixing layers of applique flowers, lace and crystals visible at recent bridal shows have come through on some of the designs you see here.”
What is the future for Modiste ?
Modiste’s future lies in building its intricate textile roots and adding a little more sparkle!”
“A greater breadth of product is in the pipeline featuring bags, capes, veils, jewel/textile pieces with a small range for Flower girls and Bridesmaids called ‘Miss Modiste’.”
“I would also love to increase UK stockists of my designs, so any boutiques looking to try something different or have their own range produced then contact
Whats your Greatest Achievement?
“Greatest achievement so far ? Rediscovering the ‘jump up and down’ joy of making something lovely…”
