Today I am delighted to spotlight on Morningside Bakes who specialise in custom designed wedding and celebration cakes and handmade sugar flowers.
Working from home in North Lanarkshire, every cake is designed and crafted to suit you and your celebration.
I hand over to Flora Kelly to tell you all about the brand…
Who are you, and what do you do?
“I’m Flora, and I run my cake decorating business, Morningside Bakes, from my home in North Lanarkshire.”
“I specialise in wedding cakes with intricate handmade sugar flowers.”
“I also make little wedding favour biscuits, often matching up with the style of the wedding cake.”
When and why did you start your Company?
“I started learning how to make sugar flowers from a decorating magazine three years ago and loved it.”
“I’ve baked since I was very young, so I made some celebration cakes for friends then made my own wedding cake in 2014.”
“After that, I had people enquiring about booking me to make their wedding cakes so I started Morningside Bakes.”
“I’ve been creating wedding cakes for two years now and my customers have mainly come to me through word of mouth.”
What inspires you?
“From my work, you’ll see that I make a lot of sugar flowers, so I spend a lot of time looking at photos of real flowers as well as growing my own flowers now that I have a garden.”
“When I have a consultation with a couple, I’ll ask them to bring along images of their chosen dresses, flowers, stationery and colours and I use all of these things to come up with a design that is unique to the couple.”
Do trends influence your work?
“Yes, current trends influence my work to a certain extent, as the choices my couples have made for their wedding day will be used to generate ideas for their cake.”
“So fashions, flower choices and colour trends will translate to their cake.”
What is your greatest achievement?
“When I first started decorating cakes two years ago, my friends asked me to make 100 cupcake favours for their wedding the following year.”
“I was a bit doubtful about whether I could do it or not, but in the end I made all of these, along with their 3 tiered wedding cake, which ended up winning a competition in Cake Masters magazine.”
What do you see as the future of your Company?
“At the moment I make my cakes while doing a full-time job as a web designer.”
“I’d like to start doing more wedding cakes and see where it takes me!”
“I found the face-to-face classes invaluable and would like to continue learning and improving with some of the best in the business.”
