A colourful vintage British Seaside inspired Wedding

Today I am incredibly excited to kick off the week with a beautiful colourful vintage British Seaside inspired Wedding.

This Wedding is so special to me as it is the Big Day of dear friends Heidi and Steve of Giddy Kipper.

This amazing celebration has been 17 years in the making and the amount of heart, emotion, and utter creativity that abounds will make your heart swell.

Images were captured by the outstanding Claire and Adrian at Harvey and Harvey Photography….

Harvey & Harvey Photography are based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and are a husband, wife and daughter team

They say of their work…

“We are a bit geeky when it comes to photography, films and cinematography and can talk for hours on our favourite topic.”

“We love people and we love photography and putting them together creates an exciting mix – being together with great people taking photographs until our hearts content, capturing amazing ‘real life’ moments.”

I hand you over to Bride Heidi to tell you all about her and Steves wonderful Wedding  ~ Part 1

The Theme

“I have a slight obsession with the English seaside – it is my favourite place to be. (Steve thankfully feels the same!)”

“I have loved the coast and everything about the seaside since I was a little girl so it seemed only natural that we should have a seaside theme for our Wedding.”

“We wanted that warm, family, nostalgic feeling to the day so we went for a vintage seaside theme with a traditional red, white and blue colour scheme.”

“We wanted to incorporate lots of seaside elements; buckets and spades, fish and chips, ice cream, union jack flags, sandcastles, beach huts…all the things we love and that make us smile!”

The Planning

“I won’t lie…planning everything yourself and deciding to DIY virtually all the details was very stressful at times!!”

“I sort of brought it on myself. I got very carried away with the planning!”

“Sadly the budget wouldn’t stretch to a celebration by the sea, so we had to try and bring the seaside to rural Lincolnshire instead!”

“I wanted to do it ALL (I apologise to my parents at this point!!! )”

“Our main aim for the day was a big, fun celebration for everyone to enjoy. Nothing fussy or stuffy, relaxed and informal as possible. We didn’t want anyone to be bored!”

“Having been together 17 years, you would think we had this all sorted but no.”

“After Steve ‘officially’ proposed, we had just 10 months to put it all in place. Plenty of time we thought…”

Budget

“We have two little boys already, a house, a mortgage and a business to run.”

“We wanted a lovely, fun day but we weren’t prepared to bankrupt ourselves. The whole day came to around 8K but that included our ‘kiddimoon’ with the boys.”

Ceremony Venue – Allington Church

“We got married in a beautiful village church about 3 miles outside our hometown. It was a very special church to me as my Mum and dad had also married there.”

“The service was very happy and there was lots of laughter and a good old sing song to childhood hymns Morning Has Broken, Give Me Joy In My heart and All Things Bright & Beautiful.”

“Reverend Stella was fantastic and made everyone feel so welcome and allowed the 31 children invited, to be children!”

Readings & Music

“We chose I Corinthians 13 read by my brother and A Lovely Love Story by Steve’s sister.”

“We played The Swan and The Aquarium followed by The Blue Danube to the congregation while we signed the register.”

“Seeing them all sway along in the pews was very funny! We finished with Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside as we left the church!”

Reception Venue – Allington Village Hall

“After the ceremony and a few ‘formal’ photographs we walked back down the beautiful church lane with all of our guests following on behind.”

“The children ran past waving union jack flags and it looked wonderful!”

“The guests then walked round to the village hall for reception drinks whilst Steve and I jumped into our gorgeous beetle.”

“We were greeted with champagne and David drove us off for a quick Photo shoot followed by Adrian & Claire (Harvey & Harvey) in the campervan with Andrew. Kev (MusicWeddingVideos) our fab videographer came along too.”

Wedding Dress & Accessories

“My amazingly talented Mum handmade my 50s style tea-length dress in white dupion silk with an overlay of crystal organza for a shimmering sea effect.”

“Underneath I had layers of red petticoats and a bright red satin sash around my waist that tied at the back in a big bow.”

“My Mum also made my necklace and matching bracelet which were made with pearls to resemble sea foam, tiny red and blue beads, starfish, a lobster and shells.”

“She also made my matching crystal tulle veil and hair comb. They were all completely stunning…she made me feel so special.”

“I love The Wizard of Oz and always wanted a pair of ruby slippers…I finally found my glittery red wedding shoes in Schuh!”

“Lucy from Lucille’s Locks did my fabulous 40s/50s hairstyle. (she is absolutely brilliant!)”

“I did my own vintage style make-up and although I was really nervous on the day, managed not to poke myself in the eye and I think I got away with it!!”

Grooms Outfit

“Steve wore dark blue jeans and a white shirt from Next, navy blue waistcoat and spotty navy blue tie.”

“He didn’t want a stuffy outfit for the day and this suited him perfectly. He also wore white Converse.”

Best Men

“There was only one choice for this role..our two sons aged 8 and 4.”

“They also wore dark blue jeans with turn-ups, white shirts and pale blue waistcoats from Next, red spotty ties and red Converse.”

“I left a gift for Steve and the boys on the morning of the wedding. A lobster pin for Steve (‘he’s my lobster’) and two little starfish pins for the boys to wear on their lapel.”

Flowers

“The Thursday before the wedding, Mum and I bought a whole load of flowers locally and after the evening wedding rehearsal, set about making all the floral displays.”

“We put together 3 enamel jugs full of flowers for the church and top table, a variety of jam jars filled with small posies for the guests tables, all of the flowers for the pew ends in the church and buttonholes for the groom, best men and my dad.”

“I handmade my own bouquet using local flowers and also to make it even more special and personal, I added flowers that my Dad had specifically grown for my wedding day.”

“I wrapped the bouquet with string and added a nautical striped ribbon.”

“I love flowers but I wanted them to all look like hand-picked flowers that reminded me of my Grandparents’ garden. We used sunflowers, dahlias, roses, gerberas, daisies, golden broom and lots of foliage.”

Wedding Cake

“We both love to watch The Great British Bake-Off (even our little boys love it) so to keep costs down, we decided to have our own version, the Makey Cake Off so that guests could contribute to our dessert table.”

“Initially we thought we would do away with an actual wedding cake because of this but in the end, we quite liked the ‘cutting of the cake’ part in a wedding so we asked Steve’s wonderful sister Jules if she could make one for us.”

“Thankfully she agreed to our ‘naked cake’ request and it was incredible!! I knew it would be good (her cakes are always delicious) but this was amazing…I cried when I saw it on the wedding day!”

“She had decorated with beautiful real flowers, edible glitter, a personalised cake topper and had even made heart chocolates!! We were blown away.”

Food

“We planned the day in sections and had a chalkboard with our itinerary on it.”

“We had a bit of a hiccup with our catering which meant we ate later than planned however luckily our guests weren’t in the slightest bit bothered!”

“They ate their ice creams first served by the lovely Lisa & Zoe from the vintage Bertie & Mabel ice cream van, ransacked the sweet shop full of flying saucers, sticks of rock, pink shrimps and other childhood favourites.”

“We brought the speeches forward too but everyone was having a lovely time regardless.”

“Later on we had our own version of The Great British bake-Off…we called it The Great British Seaside Wedding Fete Achy Breaky Makey Cake-Off (to give it it’s full title!), Makey Cake_Off for short.”

“We were completely overwhelmed by the number of entries and the standard was incredible!! It was SO difficult to decide on a winner.”

“I wish we’d been able to give every entry a prize. In the end we chose one cake, one ‘something different’ and one dessert.”

“We entered the hall to the Bake Off theme tune wearing Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood masks!”

“The winners were given a handmade rosette for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, a village fete-style card, and a personalised Makey Cake-Off spoon.”

“All of the entries got a ‘jolly good effort’ card to say thanks for entering and filling our dessert table with the most brilliant creations!”

“1st place was awarded to my cousin Han who had made the most amazing ‘Seaside Special’ cake complete with bucket and spade, ice lolly and crab made from icing on the top and inside were layers of red, white and blue sponge with a centre filled with red and blue sweets!!”

“Han was given a personalised enamel tin ‘Heidi & Steve’s Star Baker’ and inside was a Seasalt apron and a very special card written by Mary Berry herself!! YES! THE Mary Berry!”

(Han was so excited she is planning to frame the card for all to see!)

Entertainment

“Last year whilst exhibiting at vintage fair with my Mum as our alter ego Olive & Edna, we were thrilled to hear Elaine Bishop sing as part of the entertainment on the day.”

“Her voice was beautiful and stopped us in our tracks. At the time we were still in the planning stages of the wedding and decided Elaine would be perfect for our afternoon entertainment.”

“I was over the moon to find out that she did sing at weddings and she was also free that weekend…yay! Elaine is so lovely and a fabulous performer.”

“Her voice is so good that a lot of our guests didn’t even realise she was singing..they thought it was our vintage afternoon playlist!!”

“I’d asked Elaine to sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow as a special request for our 4 year old son Charlie. It’s one of his favourite songs. His face lit up as Elaine started singing…it was a very emotional, special moment!”

“After we cut our cake, we had our 1st dance to Baby I Love You by The Ramones – we couldn’t stop laughing! We sang our heads off as we swayed around the dancefloor, then it was straight into our Cheesy Disco for the evening.”

“We spent hours compiling the best playlist we possibly could and hired a PA system from a local company to play my ipod through.”

“We also hired disco lights and a smoke machine but I think we were too busy dancing to remember to put them all on!!”

Photographer

“This was one of the hardest decisions for me especially, as I know so many talented photographers! Fate seemed to make the decision for us in the end.”

“A couple of weeks before we started booking all the most important suppliers for the wedding, I went to meet a really lovely group of fellow wedding industry people at a local vintage tea room.”

“We’d all been chatting away on twitter unaware that we were all from the same town!!”

“Claire from Harvey & Harvey Photography was one of that group. We all got on so well, laughing and chatting.”

“A few nights later, Steve was looking at some wedding blogs (he never does this normally!) and came across a garden party wedding on Plans & Presents.”

“He really liked the photos and called me to take a look…the photographers were Harvey & Harvey! Decision made!”

Transport

“One of the very first things I looked for, even before the dress design, was a classic white vw beetle. I have loved them since I was tiny and my Dad used to drive one. It had to be a vintage beetle…nothing else would do!”

“I looked everywhere but most classic versions were nowhere near where we lived and having old engines, they were unable to travel too far.”

I almost gave up feeling absolutely gutted when I stumbled upon Alfie’s VW Weddings. I had to look…that’s our eldest son’s name!”

“Incredibly they had a white classic beetle called Primrose and she was perfect!! They were also only 15 minutes down the road from our hometown (I think I squealed at this point!!)”

“I contacted David & Emily and they had our date free so we booked straightaway.”

“We were also looking for a campervan to transport the boys to the church but sadly the only campervan they had was green and gold (called Alfie!)”

“I felt like a Bridezilla explaining that it just wasn’t in my colour scheme!!”

“It was a beautiful vehicle but did they know anyone else who might have another?? Incredibly, their friend Andrew who literally lived a street away had a pale blue campervan for hire! We booked Burt too and I was overjoyed!”

“Enjoy Part 1 of our Wedding Extravaganza…. Preparations to following our beautiful Ceremony…”
